Based on today's run, I'm guessing TOU is gonna be U G L Y .  Walked a lot of the last 4 miles.  Maybe I should just drop out of TOU altogether.  I don't know.

My first inclination with tonight's run was to blame it on the shoes, but after some careful consideration, I have to lay the blame right where it belongs--with me.  I've gotten very little mileage since the first of August and I don't know that my feet would respond well in any pair of shoes right now.

Ain't it amazing what 24 hours will do.  Great run tonight.  Felt like I could have gone and done it all again.

Signed up to do the Spanish Fork Half this Saturday.

Didn’t go into this race with expectations, really, of any kind.  Good or bad.  I just wanted to finish.

Which, I guess, is an expectation.

I definitely had hopes.  I hoped to finish having run most of it, walking as little as possible.  I hoped to finish faster than I did last year where, for some reason, I just really sucked it up.  And I hoped to have fun.

All of my hopes came to pass except the first where I exceeded it.  I managed to run the entire thing except through the aid stations and a section of mile 10 when my knee went all funky for a minute.

I even managed to finish in under 2 hours which really kind of surprised me considering my summer training.

The race began with me feeling a bit stiff.  It took a bit for me to loosen up, but when I finally did, it was great!  Secondly, I was having some stomach cramping issues throughout the race, but I managed to run through them.  And then, in miles 10 and 11, as I said before, my knee went all funky on me; but for the last mile it was behaving and I actually managed a sprint to the finish, courtesy of Teena and Michelle.

The first year I ran this I wasn’t so much impressed with the course.  There were sections that just seemed to go on and on forever.  And it was flat.  What I really loved, and what brought me back the next year, was the fun I had with friends and the super-awesome raffle at the finish.  But the course has actually grown on me.  It’s no PR course, but it’s not one to beat up a body either.  And those sections that seemed to go on and on forever have actually gotten shorter, seemingly.

I ended up averaging 9 minute miles—and I may have actually had a negative split!

Teena and Michelle came out and ran me back in the last couple of blocks and apparently I follow instructions really well.  My last full mile split was 8:10 and the pace I was running between mile 13 and the finish (less that .01 by my Garmin) was a 6:44!  I kept thinking, “My knee, my knee!” but it didn’t even let out a peep.  Good knee, good knee!

And so, I finished.  Yay me!

Top of Utah is next week, baby!

Funky shoes, these Kinvara's are.  Hardly even know you've got 'em on.

There’s a right way and a wrong way to do things…

And once in a great while, going about it the wrong way will get you where you want to go.

But…

There will be consequences.

The Piper will have to be paid.

I knew that going into the Top of Utah Marathon this year.

My longest run since June was 13.1 miles and I knew there was a pretty good chance—almost guaranteed—that the second half of TOU would be difficult and painful.

And what do you know.

The week following the Spanish Fork Half, I ran all of 4 miles hoping to recover as best I could from that race and save as much energy as possible for TOU.  However, my 4 mile run ended up being about 30 seconds per mile faster than I wanted, and Friday found me with tired legs.  I was anxious enough as it was—you don’t jump back into running after a potential stress related injury by running 13 miles one week and 26.2 the next.  There’s supposed to be a gradual build up of the miles, right?

But nobody has made a legitimate argument in favor of my intelligence, so…

Nobody has really argued in favor of my rugged good looks either, but still.

I spent Friday night with my daughter (a student at USU) and actually managed to get a good 4 hours of sleep—a rarity for me the night before a race.  Saturday morning she took me to the busses.  I forgot and left my “breakfast” in the trunk of the car.  Fortunately, some kind soul offered me half of her pop tart supply and I stumbled across a banana that was about to be tossed about 20 minutes before the start of the race.  There’s nothing like starting a race on an empty stomach and I’m glad I was able to dodge that bullet.

About 6 of the first 13 miles were sub-9 and only 2 were on the plus side of 10 (courtesy of bathroom stops).  I was feeling pretty good about that, but they all felt slow.  Really slow.  It wasn’t until I got home and looked at the actual splits that I realized I actually fared pretty well.

At 14 I was supposed to meet Smooth, but because of a bit of a mix up we ended up connecting between miles 16 and 17.  From there on in to the finish I was pleasantly entertained, encouraged, and motivated by Smooth.  What ended up being about a 2:10 second half could very well have been 3:00.  My quads and calves were tired and sore.  Each step sent a wave of a pain through my legs—it was almost as if the muscle in my legs had turned to glass and each time a foot would come down that glass was going to break.  There were quite a few times I had to walk and while Smooth allowed me that, she was quick to get me running again.

As we approached the finish line, Smooth broke off to meet her family and I never got the chance to thank her properly.  I owe her, at the very least, one big hug!

Finished in 4:15:57.  Went and crashed at my daughter’s and then took in the first, and apparently the best, half of the Aggies football game before heading home.

The next couple of weeks will  be spent trying to recover and rest up the legs enough that I can pull another sub-4:00 race out of St. George.

If it wasn't for the promise of good folks and breakfast afterward, I know for a fact (or at least it would have been a pretty sure thing) that I would have turned off the alarm and went back to bed.

Legs still felt pretty tired from TOU last week despite not having  run a lick all week.  I think maybe I'll go soak my legs in the American Fork River later.

It's been a while since I ran with such a large group--and these guys and gals are all aces!

Went for a walk that turned into a slow jog...

4.01 miles / 43:06 / 10:46 A.P. / Jordan River Parkway

I was just going for a walk to loosen up my calf muscles but got out there and ended up running a bit just to see how I'd feel.  Not bad--still some tightness though--I should have gone up the canyon and soaked in the river yesterday.  Or today.  Maybe tomorrow?

My last real run until the rat race on Saturday.  It felt pretty good, but it felt long too.  Taper delirium?

Ha!  Like I've been tapering at all...
