7.92 miles / 2:05:27 / 15:50 A.P. / Bear Canyon/Pine Hollow trails, American Fork Canyon

I think I'm in love...

The loop begins and ends at my parent's cabin at Mutual Dell.  Going up Bear Canyon first gets the worst of the uphill out of the way early--2000 feet of elevation gain in 2 miles.  From there to the finish it's almost heaven.  The trail takes you through Julie Andrews Meadow, down near the Timpooneke campground, up by Salamander Flats and then down Pine Hollow.  At about mile 5.5 there's the option to take another trail that would add, maybe, another two miles and a nice short climb.  If we could just get rid of the road, the cars, and especially the motorcycles on the trail itself, this run really would be heaven!  Yea verily!

The last mile-plus my quads and calves were whining a bit, but I thoroughly enjoyed this run and look forward to doing it again and again!

Wow! Excellent run, sounds very peaceful and relaxing....well, except 2000 ft in 2 miles!

Are you serious? 2000' in 2 miles?!!!! You were right at home, weren't you, cool mountain goat you!!!! :)

Have you heard of Rim Rock Marathon? It's on Nov 13 in Fruita, by Grand Junction. You would smoke that course!

My quads would more than whine...they would be mush!

I am so happy that you got to run in such a beautiful place. Did you wear your new trail shoes? Have you signed up for GV 50K?

I need to find some safe trails to run.

Sounds like you had a great time hitting the trails again. The 2000 foot elevation gain sounds brutal.

I need to run more trails. it just seems like so much work to get to a trail. I guess it is worth the work though!

Rachel--I just loved it. Peaceful and relaxing? Maybe but I was sure sore on Sunday and Monday!

Smooth--yeah--the first two miles are a hike, very little running. I've heard of Rim Rock--someday maybe I'll give it a try. I have opted out of Goblin Valley this year. :( Just too much going on.

Dale--it was AWESOME! The last 6 miles made the first 2 completely worth it!

Kathie--if I were a doctor, I would say yes and prescribe more trail runs for everybody. With all the road construction going on around my place it's almost easier for me to drive up the canyon than it is anywhere else.

Did I read that right? 2000 feet in 2 miles????????????????

What part of that made you fall in love?????

You're such a stud!!! DANG!!!

From Maynard on Wed, Oct 13, 2010 at 23:54:14 from 71.213.17.77

Yes Teena, you read that right. We'll have to have the chumps come up one of these days--it'd be FUN! My dad can have a bacon and eggs breakfast waiting for us at the finish! (He'll love that I volunteered him...)

I'm sad you're not running GV this year. Still planning on VOF, right?

Count me in on that trail run w/ or w/o bacon and eggs! From the "Rave Run" pix you posted, that's a BEAUTIFUL trail! That Julie Andrews Meadow makes you want to break out into songs: *The hills are alive w/ the sound of music....* :)

From Maynard on Thu, Oct 14, 2010 at 00:25:31 from 71.213.17.77

And pancakes!

Yes, I'm still planning on VOF--out in a tent in the park hopefully not freezing.

Can I just show up for the breakfast? Breakfast in a cabin sounds like heaven to me!!!

I had a grand vision of running trails often, once the kids were back in school, but have I run any of them? No. Soon the trails will be covered in snow and that saddens me. Why don't I ever do what I plan to do? My last trail run was back in early August up on the Needles Trail at Snow Basin. I had a blast.

I'd really like to make it out to Antelope Island for some runs. Since it's so close from where I live, I should just do it. But then again, I'd have to pay to get out there and that just doesn't seem right.

I'm totally in!!!! I've been hungry for six months now!!!! :) :) :)
