Seventeen minutes after the clock struck midnight and 2010 became officially official; two brothers, three nephews, and I set out from Mutual Dell (up American Fork Canyon) for what has become an annual tradition: the Freeze Your *** Off Run.

Not as cold as I planned on it being so I shed a layer early on and was still pretty toasty.  The road conditions were great and, aside from a bit of after-party traffic, the run was perfect!  I ended up finishing first.

11.56 miles, 1:45:41, 9:09 pace.  Actual time running was closer to 1:38:ish so my pace was closer to 8:30.

Anybody who would like to join us next year is more than welcome!

Congrats on such a fun run (and speedy one).

Nice job getting in the run! :)

Psyched myself up for this all day long.  Seems to have paid off--I got in 7 miles and it didn't feel all that miserable.  Yay!  I really need to get into the habit of doing this every day, either before or after work.

VERY VERY VERY COOL!!!!

So, was this outside or on the treadmill?

The good thing about the treadmill is that it makes running outside such a joy!!! :)

From Teena Marie on Tue, Jan 05, 2010 at 22:30:33 from 174.52.45.85

Ah-hah!!! Just figured it out from your response to my response to your yesterday's post!!!

VERY VERY VERY nice, indeed!!! :)

SO GLAD you psyched yourself up all day long! So what did you say to yourself?

Keep up the habit! Or slack-patrol-smooth would come and hound you!!! :)

Promise? I need some hounding. I read the article in Runner's World about treadmill running.

From Smooth on Tue, Jan 05, 2010 at 22:48:10 from 174.23.217.47

Absolutely!!! :) :) :)

Have you tried the 1 min on 1 min off workout? You run hard for 1 min (5K race pace or faster) then jog 1 min. Do that 10-20 repeats.

Or the pyramid speekwork? Warm up at base pace, 1 min fast, 1 min base pace, 2 min fast, 1 min base pace, 3 min fast, 1 min. base pace, 4 min fast, 1 min base and so on.

HAVE FUN playing on the TM tomorrow!!!

I practically live on the treadmill. It's funny, because after reading all the comments about trying different programs, as I ran today, I noticed all the different program options on my treadmill. I hadn't noticed them before.

Treadmill.  One of the "programmed" workouts.  Big flipping deal...  I guess that's the price I pay for going cheap on the machine.  Oh well.

Will have to work on creating some enhanced manual workouts on the beast I guess.

My TM has really lame programmed runs. The most miles were like 5 and fastest speed was 7mph. I can blame it on my hubby. He bought it 5 yrs ago from Costco when I was out of town. Well, we didn't know anything about TM nor running.

Create your own TM runs. Have you read the Feb RW issues? There's a whole article on TM running, The Upside of Running Inside. Page 68-69 has a few workouts you may want to try out.

From DonGardinero on Sat, Jan 09, 2010 at 01:04:25 from 152.216.7.5

It definitely takes a good imagination to be creative on the treadmill.

From Huans32 on Sat, Jan 09, 2010 at 08:43:31 from 138.64.8.51

Yeah I liked the articles in RW too. But nothing beats running outside.

From Kathie on Sat, Jan 09, 2010 at 22:39:55 from 63.248.105.188

I hate to run on the treadmill it is so much harder than outside, even with a good move on.

From Teena Marie on Sun, Jan 10, 2010 at 11:22:22 from 174.52.45.85

Yes, that may be a good movie ... but it doesn't even touch Remember the Titans!!!

I don't mind the treadmill if there is something good to watch and I can find the right pace.

Are you running Painters?

From Maynard on Sun, Jan 10, 2010 at 15:36:38 from 71.213.5.207

Smooth: I think you're right. I won't make that mistake again. And yet you seemingly went and did hours and hours of housework and then ran 18 miles... I can't move a TV? No, I never did finish the movie.

Kathie: I try so hard when I'm on the treadmill to envision myself out on one of my outside runs and pretend I'm there. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Last night it didn't.

Teena: Somehow I think, with you, nothing will ever out do Remember the Titans (or anything with Denzel in it). I really don't mind the treadmill so much either, but I'll let just about anything derail my good intentions on it. I will be at Painters, barring some unforeseen catastrophe (knock on wood).

1:07:42 / 7.1 / 9:33  --that includes my cool down.

a) finished watching 50 First Dates but I needed 15 to 20 more minutes of the movie to finish out the run.

b) had prepared myself for this all day long with positive warm fuzzies.

c) missed tonights episode of Chuck for this run!  Gonna have to get the TV in the back hooked up to something other than the old DVD player.

Race: St. George Half (13.1 Miles) 01:49:20, Place overall: 330, Place in age division: 27
Slow milesFast milesTotal Distance
0.0013.1013.10

Will post a report later, but I'm pleased with the results.  I expected worse.

I had low expectations coming into this race--I registered late not knowing for sure if I really wanted to do it.  I knew a sub-2-hour race was well within the realm of possibility, but I didn’t know how far under I could go.  I didn’t even know if I wanted to push for much under.

My recent struggles on the dreadmill, while discouraging, were offset by the one successful outdoor run I had on Monday.  I felt fairly confident I could maintain a 9-minute-mile average pace--so I started the run with that as my goal.

Mile 1 – 8:45

Mile 2 – 8:30

Mile 3 – 8:14

Mile 4 – 8:07

Mile 5 – 8:42

Mile 6 – 8:39

Mile 7 – 8:11

Mile 8 – 8:37

Mile 9 – 8:25

Mile 10 – 8:18

Mile 11 – 8:21

Mile 12 – 8:21

Mile 13 – 7:53

Mile 13.1 – 0:12 (the Garmin has me running a total distance of 13.03 miles…)

So I ended up running an 8:27 average pace, much better than anticipated, and I finished with a chip time of 1:49:20.4.  Sold!

I’ve run the St. George Half 6 of the past 7 years, and while I enjoy the course and the challenges it presents; I think the real reason I keep coming down are the people that I get to associate with--and I think that’s probably true for just about every other race I run as well.

10 seasons? That show went on forever.

OKAY, I was all excited and ready to sign up for the 25k on Antelope Island and then I saw the date. It is the same day as the Riverton Half which I have committed to help with--I am running a water stop. PLUS, my husband is running it so I will bring the kids to cheer him in at the end like he did for me last year. BUMMER.....on to another one I guess. That Sapper Joe one scares me, hmmmmmm.

Marc: it was the length of the episode and no more.

Kelli: I'm signing up for the Antelope Island 50K. I'd like to run Sapper Joe again, but it's the week before Squaw Peak and I don't want to over do it before that race. I don't think you need to worry about the mountain lions--there'll be too many people out and about.

I've got to have the treadmill folks come take a look at my machine before my warranty expires in July--for some reason it was picking up a pulse and it's not set up to recognize one unless I'm holding on to the sensors (which I wasn't).  I'm also going to see if they can check the speed, pace, distance, and other related readings.

It was good to run though.  Last time I ran was a week ago tonight--and I think Teena Marie was missing my reports.

So, do you perceive the effort harder or easier on the dreadmill? For me, somedays the dreadmill seems easier than the road. With that said I prefer running on the road any day over the TM.

Hey, I like them apples!!! VERY AWESOME! :)

I wonder if there's someway you can rig your TM to simulate a trail, put some twigs, bushes, rocks, mud here and there. :D

Wore the compression calf sleeves I got--not sure the run was long enough to get much of an opinion of them, and a flat road run really isn't the purpose for which I got 'em anyways.

My splits were as follows: 8:16, 8:19, 8:28, 8:35, 8:30, 9:10, 8:37 (and :04 for the .01).  The last 1.5 was slightly uphill (huge emphasis on the slightly) and into the wind.

Hey Bradley!

Nice job today. Tell me more about the calf sleeves.

From Maynard on Sat, Feb 13, 2010 at 18:01:18 from 71.213.23.86

I guess the biggest benefit of them, and the reason they are used in the medical field, would be increased blood circulation. I decided to try them to see if they'd reduce muscle fatigue and to stabilize the calf muscles, particularly on my long trail runs. I've read a bit from people who tout them more for their recovery benefits. Fingers crossed.

I got a pair of Zoot Active CompressRx sleeves.

From Huans32 on Tue, Feb 16, 2010 at 08:58:17 from 138.64.8.52

Cool. I was thinking about getting a pair of those too. Instead of the compression socks. I like the socks but the foot part. I have to wear another pair of socks just to stop all the slipping around.

VERY NICE 10K on the trail! Don't you just love today's weather!

Hey, where are you running on Sat.? I'm planning a group run on the Lehi JRP, you interested?

From Maynard on Tue, Feb 16, 2010 at 17:24:06 from 159.212.71.199

Yes, I'm interested. Give me the where and the when and just try and keep me away!

From Smooth on Tue, Feb 16, 2010 at 17:44:53 from 174.23.239.148

Goodie! OK, Here's the where:

On I-15 take the Lehi 1200W exit. It's the one after Lehi Main but before Thanksgiving Point. Go west (left) under the freeway onto State Road 89. Travel south on SR 89 for a mile or so to 1500 North (the Chevron gas station is on the right). Turn right onto 1500 N. to go west. The JRP acess is about two miles west, just before the bridge. Turn left (south side of the road) to a small parking area.

I just realize you live in AF. You can just drive north on State St. until you hit 1500 North in Lehi. Turn left at the light of that Chevron gas station. Go west 2 miles to the bridge, the meeting place is just off to the south side of the road before the bridge.

I'm not sure about the time yet. I think we can meet just before 8am and when everyone gets there, start running at 8am. The JRP has 5 miles on the north end, pass Thanksgiving Point Golf course ending just before the Veteran's Memorial Park. So a round trip back to the car makes 10 miles. The south portion is 4 miles to where it's closed off for bridge/road construction. So you can run south for a round trip of 8 making a total 18 miler. I will post more details on my blog later.

It will be fun to get as many people as possible so there will be someone to run with for whatever distance and pace as desired!

From Smooth on Sat, Feb 20, 2010 at 01:08:30 from 174.23.239.148

I LOVE running in gentle snow fall, big flakes like today. Not the horizontal snow that jab you in the eyes or the microdermal abraision kind. For skiing, the snow has to be light and fluffy, no crusty or sticky kind. I'm a little picky with snow!

SOOO excited to see you tomorrow!

Great run this morning with Kathie, Kimmie, Smooth, Kelli, Teena, Davy Crockett, and LuzyLew...

Splits are 10:13, 8:55, 8:43, 10:04, 10:47, 13:24, 8:35, 8:20, 8:18, 8:36, and 7:40 for the .84.

Good times!  I'll report more later when my daughter isn't pestering me to get moving.

OK, here's the long of it--from my perspective anyways.  Long is relative given that I only ran 10.8 and most everybody else ran 18 (and some ran even more than that).

When I left my place at 7:40, shorts and a fleece pullover felt like plenty--and then the fleece might have been too much.  At the trailhead there by the Jordan River it became overly apparent that the fleece pullover was great, the shorts might not have been the best choice.  Oh well.

I started out running with Davy Crockett--the renowned local ultra runner--talking about my experience with Squaw Peak, the 13 miles he had just finished on his treadmill prior to meeting everyone on the trail, the Buffalo Run and his plans to run the 50 mile course--twice.  I think my jaw dragging along the trail slowed me down some cause just before we hit the 1-mile mark he had left me in the dust.

For the next 3 miles I ran along side Teena Marie and Kelli and found myself entertained and occasionally amused with their conversation.  At 3 1/2 miles I started having some stomach problems and ended up walking a bit between there and the turn around.  From there back to the cars, however, I felt much better and kept a decent pace, eventually catching up to everyone but Davy, Teena, and Kelli (although they did come back about a quarter of a mile and run back to the cars with us).  I was able to meet and visit with LuzyLew a bit there at the end as well.

Everybody but Kathie, Kimmie, and I kept on running--true dedication right there I'll tell ya!  Not that Kathie or Kimmie don't have true dedication--they had both run a couple of miles before the rest of us even showed up.  I, on the other hand, had a daughter at home waiting for me.  And once I did get home, she was anxious for me to get moving on to bigger and better (read more entertaining for her) things.

So, that's it.  I'm sorry, Teena, that my early departure messed things up, but I'm sure there will be other opportunities--like next week maybe (although I don't know if I'm ready to hit 22, but it wouldn't be a bad idea for me to make an attempt given I've got a 50k in just over a month...).

Anyways, Smooth, thanks for pulling this run together.  Let's do it again!  It was a blast!

Hmmm, may be we should let Maynard plan this one, as long as it's not any mountain goat stuff! :) C'mon, Bradley where are your favorite routes? Let's hear it!

From Maynard on Sat, Feb 20, 2010 at 23:14:42 from 71.213.23.86

My favorite "mountain goat" stuff is all covered up in snow right now so you're out of luck there, and the best places I can think of are the Provo River Trail or the Jordan River Parkway.

My daughter, Addi, says my hair looks like Matthew Quigley's in Quigley Down Under--if I had a goatee.

Ry just reminded me that we are doing our 3 youngest birthday party for his side of the family that afternoon. So ... I probably can't do it anymore since I will need to run close to home OR start super super super early. :(

Good to see you again and I am glad we were a little entertaining for you! That is what happens when you run with two women who have known each other for 20+ years. Just be glad you did not have to hear us argue over who is faster (she is). I hope you had fun with your daughter, that is truly the most important thing, not the running!

Have a good week and good luck with whatever you decide to do next Saturday. I think I may do 10! And I believe Goblin Valley is what I have decided to do, that gives me time to figure this all out!

From LuzyLew on Sun, Feb 21, 2010 at 15:19:15 from 69.169.167.157

Great to meet you on Saturday. I was worried about those shorts when I saw them (I'm a chicken about the cold!). Glad it wasn't too bad after the wind died down. It's always a fun time when Smooth & Co. comes, they make sure we all have food....BTW, I'd say 41 marathons and hurrying back to read to your daughter on a Saturday Morning are pretty special (to the guys who says there's absolutely nothing special about him). Nice to meet you!

I have been reading Born To Run and I had big plans for tonight's run.  I was going to run and enjoy myself, despite the fact that it would be on the treadmill.  I was going to connect with the true runner within me.  I was going to get lost in the miles.  I was seriously going to kick some treadmill butt!  1.59 miles in I ran out of gas. I suck.

C-R-A-P!

I'm trying to talk myself into giving it another go in about an hour, but it'll be 10:30 by then.  Maybe tomorrow morning before work, but that will make a run at work difficult.  I don't know what to do.  Somebody make the decision for me--I can't do it on my own tonight.

The true runner within you is meant to run freely outside!

Do you always try to run at work? I'd say if you do run before work, then run the 2nd run as recovery depending on how hard your 1st run is. Just my 2 cents.

What a difference 15 hours makes.

7.18 miles / 0:57:47 / 8:03 A.P. / Provo River Trail

My only plan with today's run was to run with improved form--shoulders back and hips forward--not the slogging I've done for, like, forever.  I took shorter strides and tried to ensure my foot strike occured underneath me rather than out in front, which, I hope, created more of a fore/mid-foot strike rather than the heel strike I've grown accustomed to.  Without any perceived increase in effort I seem to have knocked off 15 seconds (average) per mile from Monday's PRT run.

FYI: Unskinny Bop by Poison has an awesome rhythm/beat that made the shorter strides easier.

Did you run on the weekend? Where? How was it?

From Maynard on Mon, Mar 01, 2010 at 16:29:24 from 159.212.71.17

I took the weekend off--for my knees and I had my daughter all weekend long again (very nice!).

I still struggle with the treadmill. 8 1/2minute miles on the treadmill feel a lot faster than they do on the trail/road.

From Smooth on Mon, Mar 01, 2010 at 16:38:32 from 174.23.198.220

Glad you spend a nice weekend with your daughter and resting the knees. We were thinking about you on our run.

It's strange how some runners feel it's harder (faster) on the TM while others feel it's easier. In the end, it's the road pace that counts...so yours are GREAT! Plus, you won't need to run on the TM now that the weather is getting better! Have a GREAT week!

Was sick a bit from Wednesday on through today.  Not sure what.  Nauseated, headache/migraines, generally deflated.  This morning I had the worst of the migraines, but by 6:00 tonight it was mostly gone and I thought I'd give an easy run a go.  My easy run turned into the longest treadmill run of the year.  I would have kept going but I've got an eleven-year old staying with me tonight and she wants her father to go to bed too.  Sheesh.  What fathers won't do for their daughters.

I'm about half way through Part 3 of Comanche Moon--the Larry McMurtry Lonesome Dove prequel.  I like it.  I noticed back on Thursday when I put in that pathetic 1.6 miles--I was watching 30 Rock just before I ran and Elizabeth Banks was guest starring as Jack's current love interest.  Well, it just so happens that she's also in Comanche Moon!  Yeah!  She plays the part of Maggie--Newt's mother.  And she liked Cap'n Call too before he went and got all stubborn and prideful.  What she didn't ever appear in was ER.  But you know who did that is in Comanche Moon?  Linda Cardellini--she played nurse Samantha Taggart from 2003 all the way to the end, 2009.

But I digress.  Tonight's was a good run, and now my baby girl is asleep--I suppose I could go jump on the treadmill and run a bit more.  And I would if it weren't 11:00...

Sounds like a nice little run. Good job on yesterday's treadmill run. The most I have ever run on a treadmill was an 18 miler last year, preparing for SGM. As long as I can watch a good, action packed movie with little dialogue, then I'm good to go.

First off -- sweet run on the treadmill Monday night!!! I was laughing so hard reading your commentary. I hope that the migraine and sickness is completely gone!!!

Nice job on Tuesday's run as well!!! :)

"What fathers won't do for their daughters!" You're the most devoted father there ever is! Funny stuff you watched while running on the milley! GOOD JOB!

NICE little barefoot run. How's the migraine? Are you planning to do the Forumite run on Sat.?

From Maynard on Wed, Mar 17, 2010 at 23:46:11 from 71.213.25.67

DoG: eighteen miles on a treadmill just seems almost unbearable. Eighteen miles! That's like three hours! I don't know of any movie that could keep me going that long.

Teena: if only you could peek into what goes through my mind 99% of the time. It's scary! Migraine gone. Yay!

Smooth: that barefoot run proved to be a tough one--especially the day after--even though it was only 2.2 total miles. Both feet were tired and sore all day.

From Maynard on Thu, Mar 18, 2010 at 10:53:59 from 71.213.25.67

Ankles and calves hurt.  Those hills are buggers!  As crappy as I felt in the first few miles, I ended up only being 4 seconds slower than last weeks run.

I also think that starting a barefoot running/foot strengthening regimen so close to a race (Buffalo Run 50K, March 27) was a mistake.  I think I'll stop all barefoot running until that's over.

Group run on Saturday: 7:00 a.m. at the Provo River Parkway trailhead located at, or near, Utah Lake State Park.

Sorry about the sore ankles and calves. Those are good kind or soreness though, right? Good idea to do the barefoot regimen AFTER the 50K.

See you tomorrow morning. I heard there's a trail closure or the PRP for road construction. Do you know anything about it?

From Maynard on Fri, Mar 19, 2010 at 13:41:22 from 199.190.170.31

Smooth: Yes, it's a good kind of sore. There's a closure about a mile and a half up the trail but there's an easy detour around it so it won't be a problem.

I woke up to some fairly significant lower back pain. I literally could not bend over to tie my shoes. The lady at the Walmart suggested I go see a doc. "If it hurts to lay flat on your back on a hard floor or you can't do the Downward Dog yoga pose, you should go see a doctor about that!" Come heck or high water, despite what Walmart advice lady suggested, I was at least going to show up to this race--and so I did. The ibuprofen had kicked in, thankfully, by the time I got there.

Recollections from last years experience, I think, helped me this year. My first lap was 5+ minutes faster than last years. Fly describes the course perfectly: up followed by some down and then some up and more down and then repeat (not an exact quote). And then when you get back to the start finish area, you really do repeat it all over again--all 16 miles. About 9 miles in my Garmin starting warning me that the batteries were low so at the turnaround I opted to leave it in my drop bag and save myself from carrying dead weight around my wrist on the second lap.

I struggled the second lap, but somehow picked up another 5 minutes over last years time. My finish was 6:39:xx. I actually dropped 13 minutes from last years time so I'm pretty pleased with that.

I saw Fly at the start and then again on lap two--he was off watering some rocks. He looked good and finished strong under 5 hours. I saw Dale and his son just before finishing my first lap and then he walked with me a bit as I began my second lap. He's excited to run this next year. He should have stayed until I finished--I think that may have caused him to rationally re-think that choice. Just kidding. It's really a fun race and Jim Skaggs really puts on a nice event. The buffalo stew they prepare and serve post-race was tasty, but I had two bites and decided if I continued eating it it would come right back up.

My Finisher Mug is displayed prominently here on my computer desk. I also had what I'm calling a potential close call with two buffalo. I recorded in on my camera. I'll try and post it somewhere where it can be viewed as soon as I edit out the part where I wet my pants.

Congrats, Brad on your PR.

Bummer about your Garmin -- I've had 3 Garmin 305s (I lost one, I broke one, and the latest one I've had for less than a year.). I've never had one long enough to have the battery start to go bad. If you've had it for less than a year, I would call their service department..they'll have you mail it to them, and they'll replace it or fix it for free. Otherwise, I'm sure there's a small fee. But, the Garmin tech support is awesome. Give them a call.

From Maynard on Mon, Apr 05, 2010 at 00:44:13 from 71.213.42.198

MrsFIT--OK, I was nowhere near close to actually being chased by a buffalo so you've got me beat by a long ways. The scary thing about my "encounter" was that I was within about 15 feet of these two guys (buffalo)--running--when I should have been walking and giving them a really wide berth. Had one or both of them come after me I would have had absolutely no where to run to. I think I would have just passed out, soiled myself, and been tossed about like some rag doll... End of story.

From Maynard on Mon, Apr 05, 2010 at 00:37:42 from 71.213.42.198

Kelli: My abs hate me. We have a hate/hate relationship. I'm gonna try to turn that around. Maybe.

Kathie: Yeah, the donuts have to be consumed under the right conditions and at the right time.

Teena: I was doing something earlier today that I thought for sure would make you laugh, but now I can't remember what it was.

DoG: It's good to get back into a rhythm or a fairly consistent running schedule. Races always mess that up with the tapering and the recovering. I think I'm going to give up the races and just run. On second thought, nah! I'll keep racing. Well, 'running' races. And you got to take in the donuts later during your run like you would a gu--something to pick you up.

Kelli and Smooth: If I'm not a nice dad to my baby girl, I won't have anyone to take care of me when I'm old and feeble.

It was a really nice run.  I felt good the whole time with the minor exception of the last mile when I was running with the wind and I got a bit warm.

I'm wishing they'd hurry up and finish with the road work that's got a portion of my normal route closed off--even to die-hard foot traffic.  But then again, I should know that if it's road construction it's going to be a long while before it's done.  Oh well.

I loved running today.

Mostly.

The first 3 miles sucked it up--I just didn't feel it.  But during the last mile before the turnaround (and my slowest mile of the day) things improved drastically.  The 4 miles back to the car were all sub 8!

On another note, I think I'm going to petition the county, or whoever is responsible for that trail, to ban idiots and long-boarders.  Mostly they are both the same, but today I had a guy walking two mini-dogs and he was letting them wander wherever the heck they wanted to go--which included right in front of me.  I mumbled some choice words under my breath as I hopped and skipped over his dogs and their leashes--idiot.  When I was heading back down he pretty much did the same thing as we passed again only this time we glared at each other.  And then there's the long boarders.  I can't count the number of times while I've been on a bike they've nearly caused me to crash because they don't understand where their lane is or why they should be there when being passed or passing--idiots!

I'll stop ranting now or I'll cross the civil and respectful line we've been asked not to.

On a rare Sunday afternoon run, I went local--having lived within a few miles since the trail's been there, I figured I'd better utilize it.  Went to where the JRP begins (roughly) at Utah Lake and ran north.  8/10ths of a mile up the trail is closed for bridge construction.  Ran back to the car and then added another 2 miles going east.  3.4 miles. I then drove over to the 1500 N Lehi spot and ran south 2.5 miles, got lost and off the trail at Willow Park but found it again and then back to the car.  5.22 miles.

Good run.  I really haven't been feeling it the last few runs and the start of today's was no different.  Just can't get into the groove.  That and I've got some tightness in my right ankle that's causing me concern--especially this close to Ogden.  But today, after 3 1/2 miles, things came together a lot better than they have been.  I started to feel better.  And at the end, I really felt pretty good.  Probably should have kept going for a mile or two more.  Oh well.

I need to eat something.

And a cold glass of chocolate milk would be good too!

~

There's gonna come, in the not so distant future, when my ability to go directly from work to the PRT and run is going to become severely limited.  I'll miss it when it does.

I'll have to get up early in the A.M. and run.

Or something.

My treadmill won't be available for a while either--I don't think.

Talked to the boy just after he got out of school.  He said he wanted to come hang out with his Pa.  Had a rough day I guess.  I said we'd go for a short run to get rid of some of the stress.  He said yes.  I fell out of my chair and was useless for the rest of the day.

But he meant it and we went running.  Me and the boy, side by side, for 4 miles just talking about stuff.  Four 9-minute miles with the boy beat any number of sub-8's by myself.

My ankle (I think it's actually the lower portion of my calf) is still sore.  I think it's all the forefoot running I've been doing lately.  Maybe.  I hope.  I don't know.

Went north from the house up to Highland and then east to the mouth of American Fork Canyon.  Hopped on the trail that meanders through the golf course and then behind Lone Peak High and what used to be called the Adventure and Learning Park.  From there, mostly a straight shot back home.  I was feeling fatigued that last mile, and that has me a bit concerned for Ogden in two weeks.  Fun run.  I've run most of this course before but never all together.

It's been 30 years since my Boy Scout days but I remember a week-long camp we had down in the Adventure and Learning Park--and most of that has now been developed into homes.  :(

Ogden, May 14, 2010.  “What am I even doing here!?” kept running through my mind between the hours of 5 and 11 p.m.  The answer was obvious, but I wasn’t exactly convinced.  I ate an early lunch but by the time 9:00 rolled around I was hungry and really wanted something to eat.  I ate a banana and a pop-tart and hoped that would suffice.

Off to bed—but the USA channel had a NCIS marathon going on—I watched like 5 episodes before I forced myself to turn off the TV at 11.  I like Mark Harmon (or the character he plays in the show, Agent Jethro Gibbs).

Remember way back when in the mid 80’s when Moonlighting was on?  At some point in that series, Mark Harmon played a love interest to the Cybil Shepherd character and I really didn’t like him then because he was moving into Bruce Willis’ territory.  Bruce and Cybil were meant to be together in that series!!!  And, actually, thanks to Mark’s part, I think they were.

Sorta.

For a time.

Anyways…

The folks in the next room had their TV on all night long.  Unbelievable!  And the sheets on my bed were scratchy.  I didn’t sleep well (or much) at all.  When 3:30 rolled around I was more than happy to get up and get moving.

Met up with some of the others at the Marriot and hopped a bus to the start.  Smooth and I sat on the very first seat on the bus.  I don’t think I’ve ever sat on the front seat before.  Anyways, the plan was for Smooth, Kathie, Mark, and I to run for a 3:50 finish.

Well, the first 17 miles for me were fantastic!  Except for a lack of porta-potties at every aid station like the fine folks running this show said there would be: 'RUNNER INSTRUCTIONS – AID STATIONS & PORTA JOHNS – Aid stations will be at various marks through the full course.  Please consult the map for descriptions and services.  The less-glamorous cousin of the aid station, porta-johns will be available at all aid stations in addition to the start and finish areas.'  BULL!  Thankfully, the half-way point (the start for the half) had plenty.  Anyhow, I had managed to keep up with Smooth and we were doing fairly well—on track to come in under 4 hours.  BDZ passed us just before the dam and he appears to have jetted along from there on in.  Good job, Brent!

Running down the canyon I could sense a bit of distress with Smooth—walking through the aid stations was no longer an option for her because she was afraid of cramping up.  Interestingly enough—and it completely blew both Smooth and I away when we realized it—our fastest mile of the day was mile 23 exiting the canyon.  My Garmin flashed the split as 7:15 then, but after loading into the computer and having it adjust for errors it came out at 8:02—but still a lot faster than planned or anticipated at that point.

The trail for the next 2 miles, as everyone knows, is a total pain.  Smooth’s legs were tight and any real deviation from a smooth and steady stride could set her legs into those cramping spasms she’s learned to despise.  After a close call at the first aid station there along the trail I suggested that she just run as straight a line as she could and I’d get her water and PowerAde.  I was very concerned as we passed a large number of people who were just all over the trail making it hard to make a straight shot of it.  As we passed under Washington I was afraid of what the slats would do, but we got through it OK.  As we got up and onto Grant Ave Smooth’s struggles really started to take their toll, but there was no way she was going to call it quits.  As she slowly hunched over I offered her my arm if she needed it and it wasn’t long till she did.  I was just so grateful I was there to offer her my help—after witnessing her incredible desire to finish strong and happy in the miles preceding this, I couldn’t imagine leaving her to go after a better personal time.  With about 4 blocks to go another runner, his name is Matt or Lance (??) by the way, came and helped with Smooth’s other arm.  In many ways, Smooth pulled me in.  And hearing the crowds cheer Smooth on was both an emotional and physical boost for me as well.

Final time was 4:01:19.  They’ve got Smooth finishing at 4:01:34…  What?  Interesting considering we pretty much started and finished together, step for step.

Smooth: I really hope you can get those cramps figured out whether it’s an electrolyte imbalance or whatever—there’s got to be something that can be done.  In the med tent when they got you all propped up you could see your calf muscles pulsate—it was actually kind of freaky.  Anyways, absolutely loved spending the morning with you and hope I get the opportunity again and again in the future.

Ran this with all 4 of my kids while I pushed the grandbaby along in a jogging stroller.

It was wet and started out cold, but I think we all had fun.

Corbin pushed himself and ended up finishing with a 23:18 race.  He finished, drank some water, and then puked behind a car.  Good times.

I was running with Addi, my 11-year old, fully expecting her to finish in about 45 minutes--which she actually finished in 43:09.  To my surprise, however, with less than a mile to go she said that I could go on ahead.  Really?  OK.

Chantal and Haley finished at 41:50, a couple of minutes behind me, and Addi was right behind them.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Ran 6 while Addi had her softball practice.  Last 1.5 miles was barefoot in the grass.
Race: Squaw Peak 50-DNF (21 Miles) 07:30:00
Slow milesFast milesTotal Distance
21.000.0021.00
None of that "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times" crap today.  It was just flat out ugly.
Back to Friday night: my oldest daughter was married.  I'm surprised how drained I felt, emotionally and physically, after that was all over.  I got home late and really questioned whether I should actually run the race today.  Talked to a friend that was running it and she convinced me I needed to run, at least at the beginning, with her.  More on that later.
Didn't sleep a wink all night long.  Finally got up out of bed at 2:30 and got ready and was at Vivian Park at 3:30 to get my packet and get everything ready.  My friend showed up and we started out together at 4:00.  Walking.  The first two and a half miles of this are downhill.  And we're walking.  But I told her I'd stick with her through the beginning.  Miles 2 though 6 are mostly a hike up from Bridal Veil Falls up to and beyond Hope Campground up near the Squaw Peak lookout.  From there to mile 14.5 it's up and down with lots of mud and snow.  Again, since I said I would, I ran with my friend.  Ran and hiked it a lot slower than I would have had I run it alone.
Anyways, I was suffering some stomach issues that I couldn't get resolved until the aid station at mile 14.5.  I thought from this point on I would be able to run "my" race--IF--if my stomach issues were really over and done with and if my general lack of energy and excitement resolved itself.  The wedding the night previous really took a lot more out of me than I expected.  So I leave the aid station heading downhill--down hill all the way to mile 21!--but soon realize, within a quarter mile, that I left my hand-held water bottle back at the aid station.  The very hand-held bottle that had my car key in it.  Dang!  Had to hoof it back up and grab that (adding only half a mile to the day's run).  And then, about a mile down the road, I must have been spacing it pretty bad cause, BANG!, I almost do a face plant after tripping over a rock.  And I kicked that rock really hard.  I liken it to my foot being the Titanic and the rock being the iceberg.  Not only did it send me flying, but my toe got stubbed pretty bad!  I managed to run on it a couple more miles, but the throbbing was just so intense and the accommodations I was making for the hurting toe started my ankle to hurting.  So I walked.  All the way to the aid station at mile 21, where I saw as clear as the sun in the sky that I would not make mile 33 before the cutoff, and rather than continue on with the misery I pulled myself out of the race.
Squaw Peak this year, for me, just wasn't as much "fun" as it has been.  My heart wasn't in it--so much so that I'm seriously thinking I may have run my last Squaw Peak.  Maybe.
Dang, man, that's too bad. However, you made the right call by dropping out. I would have done the same thing after an emotional wedding only hours before. In fact, I couldn't even have started the race after a wedding. Kudos to you for even attempting it.
From Huans32 on Sat, Jun 05, 2010 at 21:33:00 from 98.202.0.57
Wow man. That is crazy bad luck. And a huge struggle. But hopefully on the up side. You might be able to get that toe back in order for UVM next weekend. Sorry to hear it wasn't the fun race your use too. Was really pulling for you. And yes wedding can really be draining. And alot of time on your feet when they should of been up and resting. Let alone the emotional toll.
Wowza. I was keeping my eye out for you, but what a journey you had since yesterday. My kid getting married would do it to me too. Don't be hard on yourself. That's huge. I ran from aid station 10 to 9 and then all the way to the bottom and I am here to tell you I CAN NOT beleive you guys can take on that beast. I will never, ever get over the snow, the incline, the mud, the bushes, the rocks. 50 Squaw peak miles = 100 regular road miles. Good job trying to make the best of it, but hey, if you have to DNF, I think this was the race. I have new repsect--not only for ultra runners--for trail runners. HOpe you can recover yourself, get some rest and reflect on the amount of emotional energy you used up marrying off your kid. You are tough man!
From RAD on Sat, Jun 05, 2010 at 23:32:36 from 67.172.229.125
WOW - I nearly fell off my chair when I read you left your car key 5.5 miles back!! YIKES...UGGHHH!! A ton of bad luck piled on high after a beautiful wedding that I'm with Smooth MUST'VE been a total drain.
I am SO impressed with the fact that someone would even ATTEMPT this race! You made the right decision on the DNF at 21, but I'm sure with different circumstances you wouldn't have had to do that. You are one tough cookie!! Rest well and enjoy UVM next week, lots of friends and fun. GREAT job on the race - seriously, like Luz says trail running is like double the miles!!
From Teena Marie on Sat, Jun 05, 2010 at 23:36:39 from 208.54.14.111
You, Bradley, are unbelievably studly. I am so sorry that SP didn't pan out the way you had planned, but dang you are tough. I would have layed down at mile 21 and cried. You, on the other hand cranked out 6.5 uphill miles knowing that would put you at 56.5. Seriously, you are beyond words tough. Take care of that toe.
From Maynard on Sat, Jun 05, 2010 at 23:47:49 from 71.213.28.77
Hey everybody--need to re-write part of my report cause there's some unwarranted amazement in some of your responses. As I left aid station #4 and began the long decent to aid station #5, I had only run about 1/4 of a mile before I realized I had forgotten the hand-held. I immediately turned around and got it, adding only 1/2 mile to my run. Sorry. My bad!
From jun on Sat, Jun 05, 2010 at 23:57:45 from 97.126.224.79
From crockett on Sun, Jun 06, 2010 at 00:03:46 from 71.36.86.21
Maynard, sorry about the DNF. They happen. I think I learn more about myself from a DNF than a good race. It can leave you with a great determination to succeed in the future either in running or other life pursuits. So just consider that. SP50 is a crazy tough race. Even the best runners have DNFed there.
From Teena Marie on Sun, Jun 06, 2010 at 16:44:31 from 174.52.45.85
Regardless ... you are still the toughest of the toughest. :)
From JulieC on Sun, Jun 06, 2010 at 22:48:31 from 207.224.202.191
I feel your pain. I was wanting to DNF just before Windy Pass but where's the way out? I was thinking seriously that the race director wouldn't foot the bill for Life Flight and/or search and rescue if I just laid down in the rocks until morning. It's hard to take a DNF I am sure. But there's something to be said with the measure of stress in your life and expecting a lot out of yourself in a 50 miler!! You did the right thing. Conditions later on just got even more intense. You deserve a break!!
From CookieLegs on Mon, Jun 07, 2010 at 00:05:30 from 71.36.66.200
I think everyone entering this race is AWESOME, whether they finish or not! And, it's hard to imagine even attempting this run after the energy draining wedding the night before and the lack of sleep. Good luck in your next race - hope things all fall into place for it.
I'm OK Smooth. Just busy. Helping newly married daughter finish moving in, replacing water pump on car, going to softball and baseball games, work, etc.
Thanks for all of your comments everybody. While I'm disappointed with the DNF (and I always will be--that's just my nature), my attitude about it has changed since Saturday afternoon when I was considering never running Squaw Peak again. I will be back, hopefully next year, ready and determined to run MY race. And I'll make it all the way around to Little Valley, Bozung Hill, Windy Pass, and the run down South Fork; and I'll be showing those hills a thing or two about old grandpa's! You ready for UVM? At least you can chalk up last weeks race as a long run.
Race: Utah Valley Marathon (26.2 Miles) 04:02:17, Place overall: 559, Place in age division: 46
Slow milesFast milesTotal Distance
26.200.0026.20
A bit of rambling and them some stuff about UVM:
What a difference two years makes…  I ran this in its inaugural year, 2008, and finished 48th overall and 2nd in my division.  Never mind that there were only 102 total runners and #1 in my division finished almost 35 minutes ahead of me.  This year, running a smidge faster, I finished 559th overall and 46th in my division.  In two years, UVM went from 102 runners to almost 1400—and that doesn’t include the ½ marry and 5k runners.
I live in an old house—built in the late 1800’s—the very same house my mom grew up in.  When built, there wasn’t any indoor plumbing or forced-air heating system.  The outhouse was outback somewhere and a fireplace in the living room and the stove in the kitchen provided the heat.  To cool things off in the summer windows were opened.  Maybe.  Maybe the windows didn’t slide open and shut like they do nowadays.
At various points during this home’s existence, upgrades were made including plumbing; and finally in the 80’s (1980’s) a small wall-based forced air furnace was installed.  The vent for this furnace comes through the wall from the living room into my bedroom and then up through the ceiling.  When it rains, some of that rain drips down through the venting and into a bucket I’ve made a permanent piece of furniture.  As long as I empty the bucket after each rain storm and keep the fans blowing, my room doesn’t smell like a dank French prison.  The kitchen is another story all together.  There’s no hope for the kitchen.  And whoever said mold was hazardous needs to spend 5 or 6 years living with a moldy bathroom and kitchen—I think a body adapts and acclimates itself to the spores.  Or maybe I’m just lucky.  Or there’s something wrong with me that has yet to be discovered…
So anyways, I knew Friday night it was going to be a wet morning.  I know that stuff just from what goes on in my bedroom and kitchen—and I don’t even have to look out the window!  I can even tell you how hard the wind is blowing and in which direction sometimes.  I was looking forward to a cool and overcast run—in fact I hoped real hard that it would even sprinkle a bit.
I had no real goal specific to this marathon other than to finish.  My overall goal for all of my marathons lately seems to be a sub-4 hour finish, so that’s what I was shooting for—maybe if I got lucky I’d finish with a 3:50!
My splits are as follows: 7:53, 8:28, 8:31, 9:03 (potty stop), 8:38, 8:59(potty stop), 9:03, 12:01 (potty stop), 7:41, 8:28, 8:40, 8:15, 8:25, 12:29 (potty stop), 8:54, 8:43, 8:22, 8:55, 8:36, 9:19, 9:43, 9:23, 10:41, 9:04, 10:17, 9:30, and 4:03.
After exiting Provo Canyon and jumping on University Ave my legs just began to cycle through a series of various aches and pains: My left knee felt at times like there was sand in there.  My right forefoot felt as though I were running barefoot on it.  My right calf tightened up.  Both quads were bickering with each other to the point I threatened to pull off to the side of the road and let them walk—and I did a couple of times but that didn’t seem to work out long term.  And I got a side stitch.  I don’t remember when the last time I had a side stitch was.  And this one pestered me from mile 18 all the way through to Center Street.
I finished to the cheers of my newly married daughter, my youngest daughter, and my granddaughter.  After collecting my medal I walked over to them and the first thing my youngest said to me was, “Dad, there was this one guy that finished with a cigar!”  I said, “Oh really?  What a nut!”
I really like this course.  The uphill wasn’t all that bad—the worst for me being the climb just before Bridal Veil Falls.  My biggest issue is the concrete road from the Sundance turnoff all the way to the mouth of the canyon and then again from Lavell Edwards Stadium to the finish.  That stuff just seems to suck the energy right out of my legs.  I ran on the dirt shoulder as much as possible down the canyon but there wasn’t an option along University Ave.  Oh well.
Number 43 is officially in the books.  A week to recover for the Wasatch Back this weekend and then I’m taking all of July off.  Somebody needs to hold me to that!
From Maynard on Tue, Jun 22, 2010 at 01:34:25 from 71.213.28.77
DoG! I'm going to take some time off from running--a couple of weeks or more--to see if I can't get it back to good.
Yeah, it was pretty congested for us after 6:00 a.m. Saturday, but it didn't really get bad until we started going over Guardsman Pass from Midway to Park City. And even then it was bearable up to the finish line which is where I just about lost it. I swore then that I'd never do another RAGNAR as long as those conditions continued. I've since softened my stance a bit... :
What's wrong with your leg?????
From Maynard on Wed, Jun 23, 2010 at 19:06:34 from 159.212.71.25
Smooth: the first and second legs I feel pretty good about. I just tanked the third, but the last 6 miles were a lot better than the first 4.
Kathie: I have no idea! I've been wearing my "I'm running RAGNAR on an ULTRA team" t-shirt for weeks now. Actually, I don't know that I've mentioned it--maybe once?
Kelli: I've softened my opinion of the finish a little bit since Saturday, but it was still pretty bad for us. After 30 hours of being stuck in a van with smelly people and a fair amount of running, I think I was fairly irritable and looking for something to lash out at.
Teena Marie: I am, aren't I. :) I'm thinking it's some kind of stress injury--maybe even a stress fracture. I'm taking 3 to 4 weeks off running to see a) if I can't get back to good, and b) if I can actually go that long without running.
Eh... I don't know. I've been wrapping it occasionally and icing it here and there, but it's still bothersome even walking sometimes. I'm a bit anxious.
Or maybe I'm just anxious about my class reunion tonight.
How was the class reunion? Is your leg feeling even slightly better?
From MrsFIT on Tue, Jun 29, 2010 at 15:57:35 from 98.202.0.57
Sorry to hear about your leg injury. It's probably best to take some time off and let it heal before you start gearing up for ToU in Sept.
From Maynard on Tue, Jun 29, 2010 at 19:02:41 from 199.190.170.30
You know, this morning I was actually thinking that maybe I was feeling some improvement. Problem is I'm not really going to know for sure until I try running on it. 1.5 weeks in, 2.5 (or maybe 4.5) weeks to go.
Went and got my mountain bike out of the shop today. I have been piecing it together myself over the winter and spring with new and used parts, but with summer here I figured I'd just pay someone to finish the labor for me.  I rode it maybe a 1/4 mile is all--I didn't have my bike shoes and it's not all that easy or comfortable to ride with clipless pedals while wearing regular shoes.  Anyways, while riding the bike that short distance, I felt pressure in my leg in the exact same spot I've got the concerns that have kept me from running for the past 10 days.  I don't know.  I hope biking won't be an issue--it's the only thing that going to keep me in shape for the next 3+ weeks.  I'm going to put on my biking kit here shortly and give it a more thorough effort to see what happens.  Wish me luck.
From Maynard on Wed, Jul 14, 2010 at 19:58:28 from 71.213.44.189
Well, I haven't done a lick of running since the Relay except for a little incidental here and there. Over the last week or so, I've really tried to not even do that. So--I have no idea how my leg is as it relates to running. Walking, it's fine--but for the most part, it always has been.
Haven't done squat for exercise in a long time. Was going to go out for a bike ride, but the Elder's Quorum President just called me up for something... Don't quite know what yet. Yikes!
Bike ride.  Road bike / 18.15 miles / 1:01:32 / average speed: 17.6 mph
Very flat ride--American Fork to Saratoga Springs by way of the back roads near the lake--had to spin the whole time.
Too much construction going on in this county!
Legs actually felt pretty good considering I haven't done anything at all since the 06 July.
Yesterday I got in the mail the Captains of Crush gripper 1.5: "The gold standard of grippers!"  With it, I can ~ increase grip strength ~ speed up rehab ~ prevent injuries.  Not sure it will speed up the rehab on my leg or prevent running injuries, but those words were printed on the packaging so it's got to be correct, right?
Today in the mail I got my hiking pants!  No more wearing heavy and hot cotton pants!  Now I've got some lightweight, nylon pants to hit the trails with.  Yay me!
So, the next time you see me with my Captains of Crush gripper and some slick new hiking pants, try not to oggle.
I've just posted an update on my blog...
Slow milesFast milesTotal Distance
0.000.000.00
Well, according to Pfitzinger, I should be good to go to start up a running schedule: I've been able to walk pretty much pain free throughout this whole deal--I even went on a strenuous 3 hour hike yesterday without any pain.  The short distances I have run--getting out of the way of a bus and chasing a dog--have also been completely pain free.  So, I think I'm good to go.
Pfitzinger recommends run/walks to begin and he also has pool running mixed in.  As I don't have access to a pool, I'll just call those days "rest days."
My only concern with his "Sample" Returning from Injury Schedule has me running a long run of 55 minutes at the end of 7 weeks!  Furthermore, he suggests that, "The amount of time required to return to a full training generally ranges from 6 weeks to 4 months."  http://pfitzinger.com/labreports/stressfracture.shtml  Seriously, I hope I'm closer to the 6 weeks as my Top of Utah registration is bought and paid for--and I really hate to pay for something and not subject myself to the requisite abuse.  I guess we'll see.
I'm shooting for a 6 a.m. run first thing tomorrow morning around the neighborhood.  I was thinking 2 miles but will make the final call as I start and progress through the run.  Keep your fingers crossed for me, aight?
From Smooth on Sun, Aug 01, 2010 at 21:20:42 from 174.23.218.43
Keeping my fingers and toes crossed! I'll bet you'll do fantastic. So, did you have a stress fracture?
Long run of 55 min at the end of 7 weeks seems too conservative. You know your body best! Here's to a successful return to running. Take one day, one week at a time. Hopefully you'll come back stronger than ever! That seems to be the case with the wounded and injured on this blog! :)
From Maynard on Sun, Aug 01, 2010 at 21:25:16 from 71.213.44.67
No, I never got a clinical diagnosis for it being a stress-fracture, but I had all the signs. If I start to running and the pain comes back (knock on wood), I've committed to going in to have it assessed by a medical professional.
From Smooth on Sun, Aug 01, 2010 at 21:34:59 from 174.23.218.43
Rhett self-diagnosed a stress fracture which was confirmed by an expensive MRI. His doc was way too conservative on his rehab.
Be careful and don't overdo. The pain might be gone but the bone may not be fully healed. Wishing you the best!
I was a bit worried last night. I could walk on it gingerly, but it just felt funny. Today I can walk fine with some "residual" soreness. I'm sure it's nothing as serious as an Achilles tear, but it may be a plantaris muscle/tendon issue. I read somewhere that about 7% of people don't even have a plantaris--that it is a vestigial remnant of a primitive flexor muscle of the toes. How weird is that?
From DonGardinero on Wed, Aug 11, 2010 at 01:21:26 from 152.216.7.5
Indeed, that is VERY weird!
Doink? What's a Doink?
So hows the Doink doing today?
Were in the 7th week before SGM, not a good time to be hearing Doink?
My advise for a Doink: Absorbine Jr., a massage with "The Stick", and "RICE". Just get it better so you'll be in top shape for SGM, not to mention TOU!!!!
From Teena Marie on Wed, Aug 11, 2010 at 13:04:01 from 174.52.45.85
From Smooth on Wed, Aug 11, 2010 at 16:06:03 from 174.23.203.161
Looks like you googled doink and got plantaris. :) I dunno! But I'm sure we don't need any vestigial remnant of a primitive flexor muscle. :)
The human body is so intricate, so complicated, so beautifully weird!
How's the calf/achilles feeling today?
Hiked Timp Friday night/Saturday morning.  Fourteen or so miles, two blisters, a sunburned forehead, and WAY too many people on the trail--it's good to be home.  It was a might cooler up there though!
Spent the night at Emerald Lake, and at 4:00 a.m. I was awakened by the sound of lots and lots of people working their way up both the Timpooneke and Aspen Grove trails.  As I looked over towards the saddle, there was a constant and steady stream of flashlights.  Not too much longer those lights appeared 1300 feet above my bed at the peak.  There had to have been at least 100 people up there at the top for the sunrise this morning!
Saw more mountain goats on this trip than I have on all my previous trips combined!
Any updates? How's the calf and achilles?
I am thinking about coming up to Logan and wait at the mouth of the canyon like I did last year and run someone to the finish. I sure hope you'll be there! Sure miss ya!
Stupid shoe!  Stitching rubs the instep of my foot--or have I mentioned that before?  Guess it's been a while since I've run in these shoes.
Was going to go more but I'm glad I decided to call it good at 4.
Nothing worse than trying to run in shoes with stitching that rubs. I've been running in Asics Cumulus for a few years now and they don't seem as good as they used to be. I'm thinking about trying out some different shoes.
Had to do some serious self-talking-to to get me out on the road tonight.  And all through the first mile I kept saying I needed to go back.  Glad I didn't.
The right knee was barking at me a lot during the first mile, but it settled down in the second and wasn't an issue at all from then on.  I think the 'fix' I put in place on my shoe will help.  Ultimately though, I may end up removing some of the stitching.  There was a pretty stiff breeze blowing from the south-west that kept the bugs to a minimum--running this close to Utah Lake has, as one of its hazards, bugs aplenty.  Other hazards include (but are not limited to) pot holes, critters (skunks and raccoons) the sewage treatment plant, and trucks hauling boats and horse trailers.
This running thing, I think, is good for me in more ways that one.  Anyways, I've come to the conclusion that I'm still fairly bitter and angry about a few things in life, and running gives me the opportunity to run some of the frustration off.  Maybe one of these days I'll figure out how to run it off for good!
Good run--lots of folks out on the trail today: long boarders ignorant of the restrictions, bikers, walkers, and runners.  No roller-bladers today.  I feel like I should make one observation, maybe as part of a public service announcement: Basic compression shorts do not a pair of spandex biking shorts make--especially if those compression shorts are sheer.
Based on today's run, I'm guessing TOU is gonna be U G L Y .  Walked a lot of the last 4 miles.  Maybe I should just drop out of TOU altogether.  I don't know.
My first inclination with tonight's run was to blame it on the shoes, but after some careful consideration, I have to lay the blame right where it belongs--with me.  I've gotten very little mileage since the first of August and I don't know that my feet would respond well in any pair of shoes right now.
Thanks Kathie and Smooth.
Kathie: Yes, I still plan on running St. George regardless.
Don't know quite what to do for myself, Smooth.
Somehow or another I've just got to get my head back in the game. So many inconsequential things lately seem to have just thrown me for a loop.
Right now I'm leaning towards running TOU as an 18 to 20 mile training run for St. George. I should be able to manage the last 6 to 8 miles, shouldn't I?
With your marathoning experience, you should be able to pull through the last third of TOU. If Julie Ann can run a marathon with training close to nil, surely you can.
Didn’t go into this race with expectations, really, of any kind.  Good or bad.  I just wanted to finish.
Which, I guess, is an expectation.
I definitely had hopes.  I hoped to finish having run most of it, walking as little as possible.  I hoped to finish faster than I did last year where, for some reason, I just really sucked it up.  And I hoped to have fun.
All of my hopes came to pass except the first where I exceeded it.  I managed to run the entire thing except through the aid stations and a section of mile 10 when my knee went all funky for a minute.
I even managed to finish in under 2 hours which really kind of surprised me considering my summer training.
The race began with me feeling a bit stiff.  It took a bit for me to loosen up, but when I finally did, it was great!  Secondly, I was having some stomach cramping issues throughout the race, but I managed to run through them.  And then, in miles 10 and 11, as I said before, my knee went all funky on me; but for the last mile it was behaving and I actually managed a sprint to the finish, courtesy of Teena and Michelle.
The first year I ran this I wasn’t so much impressed with the course.  There were sections that just seemed to go on and on forever.  And it was flat.  What I really loved, and what brought me back the next year, was the fun I had with friends and the super-awesome raffle at the finish.  But the course has actually grown on me.  It’s no PR course, but it’s not one to beat up a body either.  And those sections that seemed to go on and on forever have actually gotten shorter, seemingly.
I ended up averaging 9 minute miles—and I may have actually had a negative split!
Teena and Michelle came out and ran me back in the last couple of blocks and apparently I follow instructions really well.  My last full mile split was 8:10 and the pace I was running between mile 13 and the finish (less that .01 by my Garmin) was a 6:44!  I kept thinking, “My knee, my knee!” but it didn’t even let out a peep.  Good knee, good knee!
And so, I finished.  Yay me!
Top of Utah is next week, baby!
There’s a right way and a wrong way to do things…
And once in a great while, going about it the wrong way will get you where you want to go.
But…
There will be consequences.
The Piper will have to be paid.
I knew that going into the Top of Utah Marathon this year.
My longest run since June was 13.1 miles and I knew there was a pretty good chance—almost guaranteed—that the second half of TOU would be difficult and painful.
And what do you know.
The week following the Spanish Fork Half, I ran all of 4 miles hoping to recover as best I could from that race and save as much energy as possible for TOU.  However, my 4 mile run ended up being about 30 seconds per mile faster than I wanted, and Friday found me with tired legs.  I was anxious enough as it was—you don’t jump back into running after a potential stress related injury by running 13 miles one week and 26.2 the next.  There’s supposed to be a gradual build up of the miles, right?
But nobody has made a legitimate argument in favor of my intelligence, so…
Nobody has really argued in favor of my rugged good looks either, but still.
I spent Friday night with my daughter (a student at USU) and actually managed to get a good 4 hours of sleep—a rarity for me the night before a race.  Saturday morning she took me to the busses.  I forgot and left my “breakfast” in the trunk of the car.  Fortunately, some kind soul offered me half of her pop tart supply and I stumbled across a banana that was about to be tossed about 20 minutes before the start of the race.  There’s nothing like starting a race on an empty stomach and I’m glad I was able to dodge that bullet.
About 6 of the first 13 miles were sub-9 and only 2 were on the plus side of 10 (courtesy of bathroom stops).  I was feeling pretty good about that, but they all felt slow.  Really slow.  It wasn’t until I got home and looked at the actual splits that I realized I actually fared pretty well.
At 14 I was supposed to meet Smooth, but because of a bit of a mix up we ended up connecting between miles 16 and 17.  From there on in to the finish I was pleasantly entertained, encouraged, and motivated by Smooth.  What ended up being about a 2:10 second half could very well have been 3:00.  My quads and calves were tired and sore.  Each step sent a wave of a pain through my legs—it was almost as if the muscle in my legs had turned to glass and each time a foot would come down that glass was going to break.  There were quite a few times I had to walk and while Smooth allowed me that, she was quick to get me running again.
As we approached the finish line, Smooth broke off to meet her family and I never got the chance to thank her properly.  I owe her, at the very least, one big hug!
Finished in 4:15:57.  Went and crashed at my daughter’s and then took in the first, and apparently the best, half of the Aggies football game before heading home.
The next couple of weeks will  be spent trying to recover and rest up the legs enough that I can pull another sub-4:00 race out of St. George.
NICE recovery jog! I like to take short walks on Sun especially after sitting for 3 hrs at church. Did you go to church? (I'm sounding like a mother, I know! :D )
Brad...I noticed in one of your last race pictures that you had compression socks or sleeves. Have you noticed if they help at all? I've been using a pair of injinji compression socks for the past few weeks, but not sure if I notice any difference.
From Maynard on Mon, Sep 27, 2010 at 21:34:52 from 71.213.46.75
Smooth: Yeah--Sunday's are days where I tend to let my head get all clouded up with gunk--which seems completely backwards to me, but there it is. I go "out" to clear the head and yesterday just kinda evolved into that jog. Didn't realize I had run so much til I got home and plugged in my Garmin (I wanted to measure some distances on the JRP from the lake northwards).
Dale: My compression sleeves are Zoot sleeves--I paid way to much for them. I haven't noticed a difference so much WHILE I'm running; but when I wear them after a run, I do see some benefit--calves are less sore and tend to recover faster. I had no idea Injinji had compression socks--guess I'll have to check 'em out!
From Smooth on Wed, Sep 29, 2010 at 17:58:51 from 67.41.235.104
did you start at the lake? I have never made it to the lake. Always stopped at that soccer field park and turned back north. We need to run that Jrp again now that the trail is opened on the pioneer crossing and I know how to get around the 2100N construction.
Sundays are like that...reflective time...much needed rest to dejunk our minds, I figure!
From Maynard on Wed, Sep 29, 2010 at 19:02:47 from 71.213.46.75
Smooth: I started at the parking area about a mile from the lake--maybe half that from the soccer field/park.
Can't wait to see you sooooon!!!! :) :) :)
From DonGardinero on Thu, Sep 30, 2010 at 14:14:18 from 75.162.172.54
I'm going to wear my black compression socks. I'm worried about the sun getting them too hot, as well. Maybe the heat from the sun will keep my calves warmed up and loose.
From Maynard on Thu, Sep 30, 2010 at 17:33:03 from 199.190.170.31
I am, as of now, still undecided on the compression sleeves. Yes, the darker color will absorb more heat, but the trade off might be extra protection from sunburn--especially those of me who are infamous for our sunscreen forgetfulness.
Not the best race...
The whole trip was a bittersweet one. On the one hand I was able to see a lot of friends. On the other, none of my kids made the trip with me this year. :(  I did, however, get to have dinner Saturday night with my oldest and youngest daughters.
The plan was to run a 3:55 marathon with Smooth and Kathie—and we were on track up through mile 15. I had to water a sage brush and found myself a lone man amongst thousands for the remainder of the race… I did catch up to my brother two or three times.
From 18 on I was walking quite a bit, but I saw that writing on the wall back at the top of Veyo. My legs ached and I could feel the lack of recovery in each step. I don’t know that the lack of recovery was the time—only two weeks between St. George and TOU—but rather a crappy diet. With my kitchen now just a hole in the back of my house, I’ve been eating very poorly—even more so than my normal single male really crappy diet.
Looking at my splits, the race really wasn’t a complete and utter disaster—even though it feels like it. Only 10 of the miles were over 10 minutes.
Other than the fatigue and the aches, I really felt good throughout the run. It was about an hour after I finished that I realized I was dehydrated. Or something.
Sounds a lot like many race reports - that heat was killer! Given all the variables leading up to this race, I think you did a great job. I honestly can't even imagine trying to run TOU then SGM - THAT is crazy! :)
You know, I'm just really sick and tired of all the road construction going on.  The I-15 Core Project has my street and many in the vicinity all mucked up and frequently un-runnable.  When is this supposed to be done?
I think I'm in love...
The loop begins and ends at my parent's cabin at Mutual Dell.  Going up Bear Canyon first gets the worst of the uphill out of the way early--2000 feet of elevation gain in 2 miles.  From there to the finish it's almost heaven.  The trail takes you through Julie Andrews Meadow, down near the Timpooneke campground, up by Salamander Flats and then down Pine Hollow.  At about mile 5.5 there's the option to take another trail that would add, maybe, another two miles and a nice short climb.  If we could just get rid of the road, the cars, and especially the motorcycles on the trail itself, this run really would be heaven!  Yea verily!
The last mile-plus my quads and calves were whining a bit, but I thoroughly enjoyed this run and look forward to doing it again and again!
Rachel--I just loved it. Peaceful and relaxing? Maybe but I was sure sore on Sunday and Monday!
Smooth--yeah--the first two miles are a hike, very little running. I've heard of Rim Rock--someday maybe I'll give it a try. I have opted out of Goblin Valley this year. :( Just too much going on.
Dale--it was AWESOME! The last 6 miles made the first 2 completely worth it!
Kathie--if I were a doctor, I would say yes and prescribe more trail runs for everybody. With all the road construction going on around my place it's almost easier for me to drive up the canyon than it is anywhere else.
Can I just show up for the breakfast? Breakfast in a cabin sounds like heaven to me!!!
I had a grand vision of running trails often, once the kids were back in school, but have I run any of them? No. Soon the trails will be covered in snow and that saddens me. Why don't I ever do what I plan to do? My last trail run was back in early August up on the Needles Trail at Snow Basin. I had a blast.
I'd really like to make it out to Antelope Island for some runs. Since it's so close from where I live, I should just do it. But then again, I'd have to pay to get out there and that just doesn't seem right.
Wow no water that is hard...enough about showering how do you "go"?
From Maynard on Thu, Oct 28, 2010 at 18:25:41 from 159.212.71.199
THE WATER IS BACK ON! But now the internet is out. While digging the trench to the water line they busted the phone/DSL cable... If it's not one thing it's another.
Dale, yes, the water was out due to the construction--but it was the construction that's going on at my own house. The kitchen remodel and add-on.
Kathie, with the remodel mentioned above, the bathroom has been gone for weeks. I've made good use of the big pine tree and the hours after dark. Oh, and the trailer that I also use as my kitchen.
Ugh!
Let me just say this first because the actual running experience may make it seem as if I wouldn't mind if that place were melted into glass.  The Valley of Fire State Park in Nevada is one of the most beautiful places I've been to.
The night before the race the winds were very active with gusts threatening to uproot my tent and send us flying.  It wasn't too much of a surprise then when I got a message early Saturday morning indicating the marathon had been canceled on account of the weather.
It wasn't, ultimately, but it came pretty close.
The full marathon course consists of two out and back legs--the first through the absolute most scenic roads imaginable.  The second along a portion of the Valley of Fire Highway.  The Park Rangers allowed the race to be held if, and only if, not one single cup was thrown on the ground and if it could be held entirely on the the first out and back section.
The runners were all briefed and all agreed to the changes and requests.  VOF is NOT a marathon to run for time so nobody really had a problem drinking at the aid stations and putting the garbage in a garbage bag or in the hands of an aid station helper.
Valley of Fire is also VERY hilly.
And I really wasn't prepared, but I did it anyways.  Finished.  Hurt and hurting.
So, the report.  1/2 x 2 = 26.2 miles of some of the most amazing red rock scenery anywhere!
With the changes to the full course I felt like I had every excuse and opportunity to drop down to the half--but in the end I stuck with the full.
The best way to describe this course is undulating.
Incessantly undulating.
I finished the first half at about 2:20 and I felt OK so I turned right around and began the whole process over again.  The second half took just under 3 hours--walking the ups and running the flats and down up until the last 5 miles when my knee started giving me fits.
Only a handful of runners finished behind me.  Somewhat demoralizing, but what the heck.
I was able to run much of the race with an old friend from back in my days of Boy Scouting and his brother.  The brother lost a leg in a motorcycle accident a while back and was sporting one of those really cool prosthetics that many amputees run in nowadays.  This was his first marathon--and what a doozy!
I took my camera and took all of none picture.
Oh Bradley ~ I am so proud of you!!! :) WOW!!! You are the studiest of all studes! Seriously, braving the horrendous wind and the hills from H-E-double-chopsticks!!! I was thinking about you and missed you tons! I am glad you made it home safe and enjoyed the beauty of VOF. I hope Tracy is able to keep that marathon alive...I have got to run it next year! WAY to support your friends! I'm so bummed I missed running it with you! :(
This sounds like a beautiful full! I'd pick up after myself too with those conditions. Nice job getting it done, it sounds like the weather was a BEAST!
How did I miss this race report!!!???
Dang, Bradley, you really are a stud. Seriously.
How is your knee now?
From DonGardinero on Sat, Dec 04, 2010 at 00:47:36 from 152.216.7.5
I'm late getting to this.
Well done, my good man!
You are tougher than I am. I'm not a big fan of things changing at the last minute, so doing the half twice would have really confused my brain and I probably would have turned around and drove away before the race even started.
Sounds like a fun night in the tent. All that wind would have helped me fall asleep. I love sleeping in a tent when it's windy. If it's too quiet, then I can hear every twig snapping
From Maynard on Tue, Dec 14, 2010 at 23:23:01 from 71.213.7.34
Kathie: plans are all done. Now we just get to hope they all work out like they're supposed to. Dang, that ain't gonna happen... Can't wait 'til Saturday though--it'll be a thing of the past!
Marc: thanks--I need more than a break though. How about a long vacation?
Smooth: I'll try and make more just like that one.
DoG: Yes. Very. I need to have a pair of pants let out in the waist about an inch...
From Teena Marie on Tue, Dec 14, 2010 at 23:23:11 from 67.2.89.224
Yeah, but you do some of your best thinking on the treadmill!!! I love what you post right after a long treadmill run while watching something. :)
From Maynard on Tue, Dec 14, 2010 at 23:29:04 from 71.213.7.34
Teena: Well, until we get this place I'm living in back in order so I can run on my own TM and watch my own TV, I won't have quite the commentary. The TV at the wellness center at work was playing something from The Food Network and then it got switched to The Closer on TBS or something like that--and my headphones aren't long enough to reach the plug on the treadmill so I can't listen to it even if I wanted to.
From Teena Marie on Tue, Dec 14, 2010 at 23:30:38 from 67.2.89.224
I'm sure other funny things go through your head though.
The only running I did was... nope--no running at all.  Did a lot of chasing though.
I did marry off my second daughter and welcomed her husband into the family.  Also making her debut was my second grand-daughter who was born during the wedding reception.  Not actually at the reception--the birth happened at the hospital while the rest of us were at the reception...
So I've got a very cool new son-in-law and a super beautiful, and small (6 pounds, 5 ounces, 18 inches long), baby grand-daughter!
Merry Christmas!
Trevor seems like a really neat guy! Can't wait to see some pics of your beautiful petite little grand baby. she's about the size of my babies. ENJOY your time with them!!!!
So sorry we didn't make it to the reception. We had to take my mother-in-law to the MoTab Christmas Concert where my son played in the Orchestra.
I'm going to pay you a visit in the new year after my sons go back to college!
