None of that "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times" crap today.  It was just flat out ugly.

Back to Friday night: my oldest daughter was married.  I'm surprised how drained I felt, emotionally and physically, after that was all over.  I got home late and really questioned whether I should actually run the race today.  Talked to a friend that was running it and she convinced me I needed to run, at least at the beginning, with her.  More on that later.

Didn't sleep a wink all night long.  Finally got up out of bed at 2:30 and got ready and was at Vivian Park at 3:30 to get my packet and get everything ready.  My friend showed up and we started out together at 4:00.  Walking.  The first two and a half miles of this are downhill.  And we're walking.  But I told her I'd stick with her through the beginning.  Miles 2 though 6 are mostly a hike up from Bridal Veil Falls up to and beyond Hope Campground up near the Squaw Peak lookout.  From there to mile 14.5 it's up and down with lots of mud and snow.  Again, since I said I would, I ran with my friend.  Ran and hiked it a lot slower than I would have had I run it alone.

Anyways, I was suffering some stomach issues that I couldn't get resolved until the aid station at mile 14.5.  I thought from this point on I would be able to run "my" race--IF--if my stomach issues were really over and done with and if my general lack of energy and excitement resolved itself.  The wedding the night previous really took a lot more out of me than I expected.  So I leave the aid station heading downhill--down hill all the way to mile 21!--but soon realize, within a quarter mile, that I left my hand-held water bottle back at the aid station.  The very hand-held bottle that had my car key in it.  Dang!  Had to hoof it back up and grab that (adding only half a mile to the day's run).  And then, about a mile down the road, I must have been spacing it pretty bad cause, BANG!, I almost do a face plant after tripping over a rock.  And I kicked that rock really hard.  I liken it to my foot being the Titanic and the rock being the iceberg.  Not only did it send me flying, but my toe got stubbed pretty bad!  I managed to run on it a couple more miles, but the throbbing was just so intense and the accommodations I was making for the hurting toe started my ankle to hurting.  So I walked.  All the way to the aid station at mile 21, where I saw as clear as the sun in the sky that I would not make mile 33 before the cutoff, and rather than continue on with the misery I pulled myself out of the race.

Squaw Peak this year, for me, just wasn't as much "fun" as it has been.  My heart wasn't in it--so much so that I'm seriously thinking I may have run my last Squaw Peak.  Maybe.

Dang, man, that's too bad. However, you made the right call by dropping out. I would have done the same thing after an emotional wedding only hours before. In fact, I couldn't even have started the race after a wedding. Kudos to you for even attempting it.

Wow man. That is crazy bad luck. And a huge struggle. But hopefully on the up side. You might be able to get that toe back in order for UVM next weekend. Sorry to hear it wasn't the fun race your use too. Was really pulling for you. And yes wedding can really be draining. And alot of time on your feet when they should of been up and resting. Let alone the emotional toll.

Oh! Bradley! I am so sorry it was not the fun SP you had hoped for. You looked so happy at the wedding....but I know how emotionally and physically draining that can be. I truly admire you for attempting it and helping your friend. Darn that stinking rock!!! Hope no damage done and you recover nicely for UVM where you WILL have fun. Get some sleep tonight, my friend! See you next Sat.! :)

Wowza. I was keeping my eye out for you, but what a journey you had since yesterday. My kid getting married would do it to me too. Don't be hard on yourself. That's huge. I ran from aid station 10 to 9 and then all the way to the bottom and I am here to tell you I CAN NOT beleive you guys can take on that beast. I will never, ever get over the snow, the incline, the mud, the bushes, the rocks. 50 Squaw peak miles = 100 regular road miles. Good job trying to make the best of it, but hey, if you have to DNF, I think this was the race. I have new repsect--not only for ultra runners--for trail runners. HOpe you can recover yourself, get some rest and reflect on the amount of emotional energy you used up marrying off your kid. You are tough man!

WOW - I nearly fell off my chair when I read you left your car key 5.5 miles back!! YIKES...UGGHHH!! A ton of bad luck piled on high after a beautiful wedding that I'm with Smooth MUST'VE been a total drain.

I am SO impressed with the fact that someone would even ATTEMPT this race! You made the right decision on the DNF at 21, but I'm sure with different circumstances you wouldn't have had to do that. You are one tough cookie!! Rest well and enjoy UVM next week, lots of friends and fun. GREAT job on the race - seriously, like Luz says trail running is like double the miles!!

You, Bradley, are unbelievably studly. I am so sorry that SP didn't pan out the way you had planned, but dang you are tough. I would have layed down at mile 21 and cried. You, on the other hand cranked out 6.5 uphill miles knowing that would put you at 56.5. Seriously, you are beyond words tough. Take care of that toe.

Hey everybody--need to re-write part of my report cause there's some unwarranted amazement in some of your responses. As I left aid station #4 and began the long decent to aid station #5, I had only run about 1/4 of a mile before I realized I had forgotten the hand-held. I immediately turned around and got it, adding only 1/2 mile to my run. Sorry. My bad!

Sorry about the DNF, but way to stick it out that long. Sometimes things just don't come together.

From crockett on Sun, Jun 06, 2010 at 00:03:46 from 71.36.86.21

Maynard, sorry about the DNF. They happen. I think I learn more about myself from a DNF than a good race. It can leave you with a great determination to succeed in the future either in running or other life pursuits. So just consider that. SP50 is a crazy tough race. Even the best runners have DNFed there.

From Teena Marie on Sun, Jun 06, 2010 at 16:44:31 from 174.52.45.85

Regardless ... you are still the toughest of the toughest. :)

I feel your pain. I was wanting to DNF just before Windy Pass but where's the way out? I was thinking seriously that the race director wouldn't foot the bill for Life Flight and/or search and rescue if I just laid down in the rocks until morning. It's hard to take a DNF I am sure. But there's something to be said with the measure of stress in your life and expecting a lot out of yourself in a 50 miler!! You did the right thing. Conditions later on just got even more intense. You deserve a break!!

From CookieLegs on Mon, Jun 07, 2010 at 00:05:30 from 71.36.66.200

I think everyone entering this race is AWESOME, whether they finish or not! And, it's hard to imagine even attempting this run after the energy draining wedding the night before and the lack of sleep. Good luck in your next race - hope things all fall into place for it.

From Smooth on Tue, Jun 08, 2010 at 21:49:40 from 174.23.172.155

Just checking in to see how you're doing.

From Maynard on Tue, Jun 08, 2010 at 23:41:01 from 71.213.28.77

I'm OK Smooth. Just busy. Helping newly married daughter finish moving in, replacing water pump on car, going to softball and baseball games, work, etc.

Thanks for all of your comments everybody. While I'm disappointed with the DNF (and I always will be--that's just my nature), my attitude about it has changed since Saturday afternoon when I was considering never running Squaw Peak again. I will be back, hopefully next year, ready and determined to run MY race. And I'll make it all the way around to Little Valley, Bozung Hill, Windy Pass, and the run down South Fork; and I'll be showing those hills a thing or two about old grandpa's! (or young grandpa's...)

You ready for UVM? At least you can chalk up last weeks race as a long run.
