Usually on January 1, my brothers and I will run down American Fork Canyon at 12:15 a.m. to ring in the new year.  I opted out this year cause I've been fighting a cold for better than a week.  Don't know why I figured it would be OK to go out and essentially do the same thing later in the day--even if it was 10 degrees warmer (-3° vs. 7°).

Happy New Year everybody!

Hey, there are still three more slots for the Grand Slam, if you're interested.

From Maynard on Fri, Jan 07, 2011 at 10:31:58 from 71.213.1.127

Kitchen is not done. Maybe by June... :

And I've got to pass on the Slam--I've really got to make a concerted effort to cut back on my races this year.

I need a shower and a baby girl (12-years-old actually) that will allow me more than 30 minutes to get a run in...

She did say I could go for a run in the morning if I wanted--she doesn't have school and I don't have work.  Still, I'm thinking she'll come up with something else to occupy my time.

From DaleG on Tue, Feb 01, 2011 at 00:54:45 from 67.2.93.102

What does this mean? Are you able to run at all? Does it even hurt to walk on? Maybe you need some custom orthotics. I used to get that same pain and it hurt to walk on. I saw a podiatrist and he made me some orthotics and I haven't had the pain since.

From Maynard on Tue, Feb 01, 2011 at 23:12:55 from 71.213.3.207

Hey Dale! I can run on it still--it's just not comfortable. Rather than risk a more serious injury, I've opted to take a week or so off. I don't think I need orthotics.

From Maynard on Sat, Feb 05, 2011 at 14:14:38 from 71.213.3.207

Probably Metatarsalgia or Morton's Neuroma...

From Teena Marie on Sat, Feb 05, 2011 at 21:42:07 from 67.2.102.13

Dang!!!

How is it feeling today?

Have you tried any metatarsal raise pads or lifts?

I'm sure you have read all the articles that I have (I just looked it up).

From Smooth on Sun, Feb 06, 2011 at 21:12:44 from 67.2.113.127

So sorry to hear about that! My son, a podiatrist in training, said the same thing as Teena on the metatarsal raise pads or lifts, the least invasive treatment.

Hope your feet get better soon!

From Kathie on Tue, Feb 08, 2011 at 16:34:36 from 63.248.105.188

How are you feeling now? I hope you are close to feeling better.

From Maynard on Tue, Feb 08, 2011 at 23:00:11 from 71.213.3.207

I haven't run since Jan 25--the doc told me to lay off the running until at least Friday to see if the pain subsides. I almost feel like a pansy because the pain wasn't bad--just a dull, incessant ache. So we'll see how things go. The foot is feeling better though. If, when I start running again, it flares up again, I'm off to a podiatrist: cortisone shots or a neuroma-ectomy. Or maybe I could just suck it up.

From Smooth on Tue, Feb 08, 2011 at 23:30:51 from 67.2.82.197

Glad the foot is feeling better. A good podiatrist will explore all the options before taking cutting the foot.

You are being such a good boy to lay off running per doctor's order...not pansy at all. Here's hoping the best!

Smooth: Funny you would ask just as I walked in the door after running 4.9 miles. I don't know that my time off did much, but my run today didn't hurt either. I don't know what's up.

From Smooth on Sat, Feb 12, 2011 at 16:39:59 from 67.2.89.227

No pain on the run is good news!!! Hope it continues to get better.

From Maynard on Sat, Feb 12, 2011 at 16:42:10 from 71.213.3.207

Yes--I think that my be a big part of it. I've been wearing a "newer" pair of old penny loafers because my comfortable pair need the heels replaced. They're both narrow and have absolutely no cushioning.

From MarcE on Fri, Mar 04, 2011 at 00:07:33 from 204.16.82.120

Maynard, I hear ya. Hang in there, bro. I totally agree about the SGM 2007 shirt. It is the most uncomfortable shirt I own, but it holds the fondest memories of any other shirt. It was my first trip to Utah.

From fly on the Wall on Tue, Mar 08, 2011 at 10:37:55 from 204.113.19.47

Great! This means you are still planning on running it. I look forward to seeing you on the island. No need to worry about embarrassment- unless you have to make a pit stop trail side!

The 2007 St. G. shirt does sucketh, but so does every St. G. shirt I've ever had. A short sleeve cotton t-shirt would be far superior to the poorly sized, oddly shaped, and poorly assembled "technical" shirts they've come up with.

Short of my goal again--I wanted 60 minutes or 7 miles.  The treadmill is winning the psychological battle that's raging between the two of us.  Or I'm just a huge pansy lately.

The foot seems to be doing fine--especially when running.  There are odd moments when I'll feel the neuroma start to throb for a bit, but it usually goes away as quickly as it came.

~

The alarm sounded at 5:00 a.m.—as expected.  I had been awake for what felt like most of the night anyway with pre-race anxiety.

You’d think after 60+ races, and never missing a one due to sleeping through the alarm, I’d be able to get in a good night’s rest.

Whatever.

A quick shower, don the running clothes, insert contact lenses, run through mental checklist, load up the car, run through mental checklist, head out.  That could be, and probably is, the morning ritual for me every race day.  On this one though, I was trying to talk myself out of it as well.  Even while I was on the road I kept thinking how easy it would be to turn the car around and go back home.

That’s a pretty stark contrast to the feelings I was having 12 hours earlier when I was really excited and hoping for a muddy run with the benefit of a light snow fall.  Maybe the fact that I woke up to a star filled sky dampened my excitement.  There would be no lightly falling snow.  There was, however, the near certainty of mud.

I had to stop at Walmart twice.  Once as I was leaving town to get my breakfast and a can of veggies.  The second just before arriving at the island to take care of some urgent business.  Picked up a long-sleeved shirt on my second stop fearing I hadn’t brought the right combination of shirts.  I looked for some of those cheap knit gloves thinking I had forgotten mine—stupid review of my mental checklist had let me down.  Twice.

Or not.  I had an old pair in my gym bag hidden under the deodorant and the hair gel.

No, I did not use hair gel before the race.  But I probably should have.  The hat I brought to wear did not even come close to matching either my shirt or my shorts.  I was once told by a Western States 100 finisher that it’s not how fast you finish that’s important—it’s how you look while you’re running.  If she saw me in that hat with the shirt and shorts I had…  Well, I’d never hear the end of it.

I made it to the island in time to see the 50k runners off.  I was fortunate to park next to someone who had also decided to bring a can a Bush’s Black Beans.  In the hour between the 50k start and the 25k start, I decided I really had planned well in the shirts I brought.  The new long-sleeved shirt I picked up for $10 would have to wait for another day to be worn.

I don’t know that I knew anyone running the 25k.  I take that back—I did know one person.  I knew a couple folks running the 50k.  And one person running the 100 mile.

So 9:00 rolls around and the 25k race begins.  We were instructed to move off the trail for the other runners coming down.  I was probably somewhere in the middle of the pack and noticed that all the runners coming down were going out wide around us.  I don’t know if it was cause the folks up front didn’t hear the announcements or were just mean bullies.  No shouting or cursing occurred as a result.  At least none that I heard.  Led Zepplin’s D’yer Mak’er and Cee-Lo Green’s Forget You were playing fairly loud in my ears that first mile so I don’t know for sure.

I needed to make a bathroom stop early on but resisted the urge.  There’s just nowhere to hide out there.  It wasn’t until mile 3.6 that I was able to secure enough cover to take care of business.

I was skipping along, about 5 miles in, whistling a happy tune, when up ahead I spied Fly coming towards me wearing his signature Hawaiian shirt.  He looked good too!  He was cruising along.  I actually just typed cursing before I realized my typo—but then again, was it a typo?  But like I said—he was cruising at, as per his report, an average pace of 9:49.  My average was 10:55 and I only ran half of what he did!  We high-fived and each went merrily along our separate ways.  He was wearing some knit gloves.  I had taken mine off.  I hoped he hadn’t been using his to wipe his nose like I had been using mine…

THERE WAS PEPSI AT THE ELEPHANT HEAD AID STATION!  I love that aid station.

I clocked a 7:55 running down to the bottom of the Split Rock Bay trail.  Maybe the Pepsi had something to do with that—I don’t know.  I ran/walked up to the top of the switchbacks and then ran most of the way back to the Elephant Head aid station jonesing for some more Pepsi.  They were happy to oblige.  I probably should have passed on the Oreos though.  I was coughing up and spitting out Oreo gu for 20 minutes after leaving.  That’s a personal note-to-self: skip the Oreos or make sure they’re properly washed down before moving on.

I passed Fly again at about mile 12 and we did the high-five thing again despite the concerns I had the last time about where his gloves had been.

After that last climb that ends at about mile 12.5 I just wanted to keep moving without the wheels coming off.  Or wobbling much.  Seeing as how I didn’t get a good look at my backside through those last 4 miles, I’m not sure how I looked, but I felt OK.  When I got passed by a lady I had passed way back on the switchbacks, I kinda got ticked off at myself and took off passing a number of folks in the last two miles but not, unfortunately, that one lady.  I’m sure I’ll get my chance at some payback though.  Maybe.

So I crossed the finish with a 2:55:31.7 finish, feeling pretty good about it.  The neuroma didn’t flare up at all!  I enjoyed some delicious buffalo stew and a Pepsi and had to head on home.  My grandparents home is getting remodeled and there’s at least two people that expect me to contribute to that effort.  I’d hate to disappoint them.

Jim puts on a first rate production out there on Antelope Island and I’d encourage everyone to sign up for one of his races next year.

I am grinning from ear to ear reading your report!!! You are so funny! Sounds like you enjoyed the run a lot! Laughing so hard about your high 5-ing Fly's snot-laddened gloves! I was wondering why you picked up a can of veggies until I got to the delicious buffalo stew part! Aha!! One of these days I'm going to do that 25K! You inspired me!!! :)

From Maynard on Tue, Mar 29, 2011 at 23:52:40 from 71.213.2.111

POTENTIALLY snot-laden gloves. I don't know for sure. I was just wondering what if...

Yep, next year, Smooth, you'll have to run this thing.

Your race reports never fail to entertain. Dang, maybe I SHOULD have walked the race. I was there watching for you and Fly, but alas, I never saw either of you. I'm thinking I probably got there too late to see you come in and I may have turned my back when Fly cruised in.

From Kathie on Wed, Mar 30, 2011 at 00:03:32 from 97.126.209.130

Great race!!!!

Loved the high 5 with fly...runners snot is germ free so you don't have to worry.

From Teena Marie on Wed, Mar 30, 2011 at 19:09:03 from 67.2.71.182

Okay, let me see if I got this straight: the gel and deodorant were for Fly so that he no longer had to use his snotty gloves to fix his hair and he could keep his Hawaiian shirt's armpit area dry and fresh; the veggies were for neutralizing the acidic upchuck of the oreo gu you remembered to bring after doing your mental checklist twice; WalMart was your sponsor because you looked so classy in your nice outfit; and the lady there that passed you was showing off because she wanted to ask you to Prom?

Am I getting all this right?

From fly on the Wall on Thu, Mar 31, 2011 at 10:17:07 from 204.113.19.47

Great report and a well run race!

"He was wearing some knit gloves. I had taken mine off. I hoped he hadn’t been using his to wipe his nose like I had been using mine…" Fear snot not, I use the back side of my gloves to wipe my nose and high-five with the palm side. There is a fairly low chance of cross contamination. But really, did you not use the back of your bare hand for the same purpose?

"I was once told by a Western States 100 finisher that..." You Know Who? Where is she and is she running these days?

Maynard if I may- Teena, some clarification. I was wearing a hat. Furthermore, the hair on my head is cut way too short to have any use for gel and my nose hair was already nicely styled with snot. The gel was surely intended for my ear hair, though it would have proven just as effective on my eyebrow.

Despite the snow I didn't struggle to get out of bed.  I love running in the snow!  Yes, it kind of rankles me that it's snowing in April, but consider the locale...  And I've ran in 4 to 6 inches of the fresh stuff in early June, so it's really not that late.  At the turn around the snowflakes were HUGE! Loved it!  Felt pretty good throughout--particularly the first 9 miles.

I must be getting old because the rest of the day my hip joints ached--even Excedrin didn't seem to work.  This morning I'm fine though.  :|  Mostly.  My nose is running something fierce, I'm all congested, and I've got a slightly scratchy throat.

My two youngest spent the weekend in Logan with their sister and I had the assignment of picking them up this morning.  Went up last night instead and we had some good quality family time playing card games and stuff.  The plan was to get up early and go for a run with Hay.  Ended up sleeping in a bit but we still ran--I just got home later than anticipated.  Oh well.

We ran portions of the last few miles of the TOU course.  It's funny how you miss things while you're racing, or how streets look completely different without a string of runners and cones and aid stations along it.

Wow, very cool.

Hey, are you going to run the American Fork Half or the Timpanogos Half? I signed up for the Full marathon at the Timpanogos half. They are calling it the Sogonapmit Marathon. They have 100 slots open. You start at the finish line and run up to the start and try to get back to the finish before the half runners get there. I doubt I will be able to beat them, but I'm hoping I can get to them before they start.

From Maynard on Thu, May 05, 2011 at 01:12:22 from 71.213.8.107

Rachel--I was very surprised to see the pacing when I got done. The run felt long and slow even though I felt really good throughout. Go figure.

Hey Dale--I'm doing the AF Canyon Half. I saw that bit about you and the Sogonapmit Marathon. I've run down AF Canyon hundreds of times (OK, dozens) but never up it. (Although I have run up the north fork to Tibble Fork a few times...) I'll have to see how things pan out for me in July, but I definitely don't see myself doing the Sogonapmit.

From DaleG on Thu, May 05, 2011 at 01:16:30 from 152.216.7.5

It'll definitely be challenging running up the canyon. I've never been to that canyon before. Is it steep? I hope I won't regret signing up for it.

From Maynard on Thu, May 05, 2011 at 01:23:07 from 71.213.8.107

There's roughly about 1800 feet of elevation gain from AFHS (the start/finish) and Tibble Fork (the turn-around/start). 1500 of those feet are in the 7.5 miles that are inside the walls of the canyon itself. The really steep stuff is on the Alpine Loop side which you avoid altogether.

From DaleG on Thu, May 05, 2011 at 01:25:11 from 152.216.7.5

That's good to know. Perhaps I'll make it to the half marahoners before they start. I guess the marathon starts at 3:00 a.m. and the half starts at 5:30.

Keys to success (yes, I'm calling this a success because I came in under 4 hours):

  • Good luck.  With the weather and the house remodel, training hasn't been all that great.
  • No potty breaks of significance and only one of the insignificant variety.  I love it when that happens!
  • Only two splits over 9:30!  One of them was going up the hill at mile 14 (10:52)--I was trying to be conservative given my poor training. The other was a fluke--9:45 at mile 20 in the middle of Ogden Canyon?  What's up with that?
  • The rest of the splits were fairly consistent. Except for a few in Ogden Canyon.  Again--what's up with that?
  • True grit.  Actually, I don't know--I've just always wanted to say that.
All in all, it was a good day.  Got to see lots of my good running buddies and I came away having gotten (or given) hugs from (or to) many.

That one insignificant one was insignificant? I thought it would be horribly embarrassing the way you were jeered at and taunted by the passing crowd :)

Good stuff Maynard! Happy to see you enjoying the race, and it was great to see you and chat with you a bit as well. I'm going to venture a guess at your splits. Did you go through the water stops walking? All of my long splits coincide with water stops. Makes those splits just a tad longer. Also, I know some people lose reception on their garmins down Ogden canyon as well - maybe that messed with it a bit?

Either way, I'm very impressed with your amazing finish!! Awesome!

What should have been a nice little hike turned into an ordeal.  4.7 miles in I realized I had lost my camera--had to back track 1.25 miles up the trail until I found it.  And by that time the joy of the hike had been lost.  Got my feet wet in a couple stream crossings--which I enjoyed.  The water in my water bottle tasted soapy--which I didn't enjoy.  I hope the water coming out of the Grove Creek Spring is safe to drink...  Had a Pepsi when I got home and it's never tasted soooooooooo good!

Every time I see that you venture out into the wilderness, it makes me want to explore some trails around here more and more. I need to get off my butt and do it. I've lived in the Ogden area for nearly ten years and have only done one trail run up at Snow Basin.

Nice job.

Smooth, I don't know that I 'enjoyed' the unexpected, but I sure was grateful to find the camera smack dab in the middle of the trail just waiting for me to come back for it... Phew!

Dale, I've lived in this area for 40+ years and it has only been the last couple that I've ventured off the old stand-by trails and routes. I've got so much more exploring to do around here! And anybody willing to join me is more than welcome!

Kathie, nothing, with the exception of maybe a nice juicy burger, hits the spot after a run or a race quite like a Pepsi. The Dr. Pepper must be it for you.

It might be a good idea for me to wait a bit to write this report--for a time when I'm feeling a bit less bitter and angry.  But then I'm always bitter and angry about something...

Half #2 for both my older daughters Tilly and Hay-Hay.  I felt pretty fortunate 2 weeks ago that I got them both across the finish line in 2:27, but with the kick they had at the end I knew they had more in them than they had been letting on.  But then the older of the two started suffering from shin splints so we cut her runs down to almost nothing.  But she has the "bug" and keeping her from running 0 didn't work.  She KT Taped up Friday night and was raring to go Saturday morning.  Sort of.  Both girls said they were even more anxious for this race than they were for their first.

We started out towards the back after having visited with Smooth and Karen and some of my work buddies.  I work for Intermountain and there were a bunch of Intermountain employees there running and/or volunteering.  Off we went at the start and were cruising right along.  The canyon will frequently play games with my Garmin so I'm not confident in the splits it gave me but I'm fairly sure were were averaging in the 9:00 range--which I thought was great.  The shinsplints didn't seem to be an issue except for when we were out of the canyon and there were a couple of short sections of steeper downhill that bothered her some but not much.  That we finished at or near a 10 minute average was super-duper.

We then passed up the breakfast there at the finish for breakfast at IHOP so the kiddies and spouses of my girls could eat.

And then we went to the pool where I did really really good about applying sunscreen except on the tops of my feet and shoulders.  I'm an idiot.  And then the younger of the two daughters and her hubby took me to a Real Salt Lake game for fathers day.  I drove up to meet them in Sandy and dumped my car so we wouldn't have to pay for parking for two cars.  I picked a poor spot to drop off my car cause it was lovingly and graciously hauled off by a pair of predatory towing guys.  $250 later, I'm home with my car.  @$^ @!$^ !!#%$^ #$%#@!!!  It was a good day.  :|

Replaced water pump in son's car.  Stress level probably accounted for about 12 fast miles.  In the time it took I could have come close to finishing a marathon.  His car is operational now and he owes me $50 for parts and labor ($40 parts, $10 labor--what a rocking deal!).  Or am I obligated to give it to him free of charge because of the whole father/son relationship thing?  It's not like I gave him my blessing when he got the car--I thought there were certain things he needed to do to show he was up to the responsibility of car ownership.  And I'm still waiting.  So am I and enabler by fixing his car?  Or, by expecting him to pay the cost of the repairs am I forcing him to accept some of that responsibility I was originally looking for?

Such an awesome run.  The last 2 1/2 miles I got caught in a torrential downpour.  One of the thunderstorms that hit Utah County zeroed in on me.  Within 30 seconds I was as wet as if I'd jumped into the pool.  Wind gusts had the rain falling sideways.  Lightning was flashing all over the place, and the thunder so loud and close my teeth were rattling.  It was just a really cool end to the run--one I didn't expect but embraced when it hit.  It just felt SOOOOOOO good!

Slow milesFast milesTotal Distance

2011 Deseret News Marathon

The birthday gift I gave myself that went south…

A little bit of minor background on me: I’ll occasionally get migraines but never have I had one affect one of my marathons—until today.

Saturday through Sunday night I was dealing with a moderate migraine.  Not so much debilitating, but it definitely affected my appetite and what and when I was able to eat—pretty much nothing Saturday afternoon until Sunday night at about 6.  And then what I ate probably wasn’t the best pre-marathon fare.

I found Tom Slick at the top early Monday morning and we discussed what a crazy, nut-brained thing it was to be up there like we were—half-heartedly joking about our hopes to simply survive the darned thing.

Up through mile 13 I was maintaining what I considered a decent pace in spite of the fact I had to take a potty break at the base of the hill at mile 5.5.  In the middle of the 14th mile I had to take another that really played games with my head.  Stupid stomach issues.  My migraines ALWAYS wreak havoc with my digestive system and after the stop in the 6th mile, I thought I had dodged that bullet.

WRONG!

The stop at 13.5 and another just before diverting off Sunnyside onto Crestview and Wasatch really messed things up for me—not just physically, but mentally and emotionally as well.   By mile 21, after almost catching up to Slick, I had said goodbye to my last sub-10 minute mile and started counting into the 12’s and 13’s.  Every swig of water and Gatorade would not settle and I often found myself longing to just puke it all right back up.  I wished so many times that I had brought a couple of bucks so I could have swung into a convenience store and picked up something ice cold, like a Pepsi, to settle my tum-tum.  I’m pretty sure I’m done with Deseret News, but just in case I ever eat those words, somebody remind me to pack a couple of dollars with me.

The last 8 miles also included a new left knee twinge and the resurfacing of some foot pain I thought I had left in the dust months ago.

I ended up finishing with a 4:39:21 (my watch time) which, after adjusting expectations, is OK with me.  Not quite the birthday present I wanted to give myself (a sub 4 hour run on that course), but it is what it is.

Happy Pioneer Day, everybody.  And Happy Birthday to me!

Oh Bradley! I am so so so so sorry for the migraines and the terrible tummy issue! WAY to tough it out! So sorry it was not the birthday present you had hoped for! DANG IT!!! DNews is such a beast combined with the hot and humid and terrible course support, it takes guts (no pun intended) to conquer that monster of a race! You ran courageously!

Recover well, treat yourself to a nice delicious birthday dinner! I am so proud of you! Have a HAPPY remainder of your birthday!

Brad, Stupid migraines!!! I, too, suffer from them and I'm always worried I will get one the night before a marathon and I did last SGM, but that was self-inflicted. It took a lot of guts for you to run that race not feeling 100%, but you did it. My Adidas hat is off to you. Happy birthday to you!!!

From DaleG on Mon, Jul 25, 2011 at 19:27:55 from 152.216.11.5

One more thing....The foot pain. I am still dealing with it (Metatarsalgia)and I feel like it's never going to go away. There is only a short time to get ready for SGM, so I guess I better suck it up and deal with the pain. I can't miss two SGM's in a row. I hope you can get the pain under control.

Dang headache, i am sorry about that. I do not know how you even dealt with that! But you are tough. HAPPY BIRTHDAY, hope you gave yourself a nap, too.

Oh Bro Maynard, I thought that you had passed me by forever at 11 0r 12 when I stopped for a pottie break! I guess you one upped me! I kept chaseing some other guy in a white shirt and blue trunks that I never caught...I thought it was you. But at the end he took off and didn't wait for me. (remember) sorry to hear you had troubles, I guess it was going around, and it seems as though we stuck it out and made a finish of the DNM.....This is one tough mary!!!!!Happy belated birthday!

My Hay's first marathon. Hay is my second daughter.

She did extremely well besting my first marathon time by 25 minutes and her mother's by 16.  In my defense, I ran my first marathon, up through mile 22, with my really-really slow brother... (in my brother's defense, he's beaten me at St. George for the past I don't know how many years.)

Not much of a report, I know; maybe I'll post something more later.

ST. GEORGE BITES!

Well, that's how my report would have started if I'd have posted it Saturday.

As it is, two days later, I'm not quite so critical.

No, my time didn't magically improve by 45 minutes, nor did the pain and suffering I endured diminish (well, not very much anyways...), but my perspective on it has changed. I think a good nights sleep and losing the intense migraine may have helped with that.

Anywhooo...

At the start just when we finally were approaching the actual start line, I realized I needed the port-a-potty and dashed over and used the ones in the elite corral and so my actual time was 7 minutes off the clock time. I didn't want to even look at the splits on my Garmin because the way I felt at the finish I 'knew' that from mile 9 on I had been running 30 minute miles. This morning, Sunday, I finally reviewed the splits and found them to be much better than anticipated. Still, from 14 on I did a lot of walking and limping and self-motivating. Really could have used some self-medicating but all I had was Tylenol and that just wasn't cutting it.

At TOU two weeks prior, that I ran with my daughter, at some point I kicked my right ankle with my left foot pretty good. Never bothered me then, but in the days after it was pretty sore. But then it wasn't and all seemed fine. By mile 13 at St. George, however, it started to bother me some--and then I slightly brushed it with my other foot again and you'd have thought I had been shot! OK, it wasn't quite that bad, but it hurt. By mile 21 it was feeling better but all my energy had been sapped and I struggled with an odd run/walk thing that eventually got me to the finish

4:32:59. :|

15th St. Geezy and 50th overall.

I don't want to whine so I'll leave most of the cheese out of this.  Most of it.

The frustration from the packet pick-up had me flustered to the point that I left stuff in my car in my rush to get my bib on and onto a bus--most importantly, my gloves and hat.  I froze up at the start.  Fortunately, hypothermia kicked in and I was overwhelmed with a sense of warmth and well being.  And then the race started and I forgot all about all that other stuff.

I started the race with Kelli and Rachel who were both a part of the 1:50 pacing team.  And the 1:50 pacing team was, IMHO, the coolest pacing team there.  Of course they were also the only pacing team I interacted with, so...

The first 5 miles were a bit steep for my liking, but the sub 8's on all of them were nice to have in the bank--especially when mile 7 clocked at 9:05.  For the final 6 miles, I attempted to find my Zen state, succeeding at times, not at others, averaging 8:20.

Finished 12 minutes faster than planned and expected.  Got my medal, picked up my shirt, helped sort through drop bags, rode the bus back to the mall, and went home.

I had been toying with the idea of going into work but opted not to—it was a “holiday” after all…

During the drive from the house to the Canyon Glen parking lot the thought entered my mind that a trail run might involve a mountain lion.  Don’t know why that thought popped up this time and not at others, but it did—and I nearly scuttled my plans.  Fortunately I didn’t.  And no cougars were seen.  And that’s probably how they planned it.

I’ve run and/or hiked this trail a number of times but this was the first time I actually ran what I planned—and then some.  The Great Western Trail, I believe, splits and runs past Mt. Timpanogos on both the western and eastern sides.  I think.  I might have misheard that somewhere once upon a time.  Not that it matters.

At Canyon Glen you can hit the Great Western Trail and run it north to Dry Canyon, Battle Creek, Grove Greek, and end up in American Fork Canyon.  Going from AF Canyon/Timpooneke to Provo Canyon makes for a very fun mountain bike ride.  I expect it would make for a nice run as well.  Maybe in the spring…

So, I started at Canyon Glen with the simple goal of running as far as the rock pile about 2 ½ miles up the trail.  Most of that is uphill and I hiked most of it, running the flats and the downs.  Never saw a soul, which was weird given that the parking lot was packed.  I found myself constantly scanning the brush and checking the snow for tracks left by a big cat.  Nothing.

At the rock pile I was debating whether I should head back or head on up the trail for a bit more when a blonde comes traipsing out of the scrub oak.  We exchanged greetings and commented on the weather, and off she went along a trail I’d never been on.  “Hmmmm. I wonder where that goes?”  But did I want to follow this young lady and possibly give her the impression that I was stalking her?  I waited a few minutes and off I went after her figuring I just go ½ a mile or so to the top of a hill the trail appeared to be heading towards, at which point I’d turn around.  About ¼ of a mile up the trail I came around a bend and there she was—tying her shoes.  I was by no means quiet or stealthy as I stomped up the trail, but she never once looked up or acknowledged me in the least.  Until I was right there.  And I guess I gave her quite a scare.  She was wearing headphones so I suppose I shouldn’t feel too bad, but I did, apologized and kept on going.

And I’m glad I did!  About ¾ of a mile past the first rock pile is a second rock pile at the top of a knoll that stretched out from the base of Timp and gave a pretty nice view of the southern end of the valley.  I wished I had my camera but I didn’t and spend a few minutes there lamenting the fact before heading back.

I’m not much of a climber but I sure love storming back down the hillside once I’ve gotten to the top.

Woke up today and wished that I didn’t have to go into work for reals.  The lack of snow up on those trails really has me jonesing to run—and work effectively puts the kybosh on those aspirations.

Work.  If only I didn’t have to!

Flash back to 2005 and a bout of the flu in the days prior to SGM.  I DNF'd that year, have beat myself up over and over again on account of it.  But, having spent the day sick in bed yesterday with the flu again, I think I remember why I jumped ship back in '05.  I'm registered to run the New Year's Revolution run thing at the Olympic Oval on Saturday.  I wonder how that'll turn out...

What a bummer!!! I hope you feel better, or good enough to run on Saturday. I'm signed up for that thing at the oval, too, but I am so out of shape, there's no way I'd make the 4 hours I signed up for. Oh well, maybe I can sleep in.

Officially: 19.25 miles | 4:00:22 | 12:30 pace | Utah Olympic Oval | New Year's Revolution Run

I got to looking at the numbers later today and just started to think they didn't quite line up. I mean I know I was going slow, but I don't think I was anywhere near THAT slow!

Or maybe I'm just getting old and senile and have begun to create imaginary realities that I really believe...

I've heard from quite a few people that their laps were shorted. Plus, you have to remember that is start to finish time AP. Not just running time. So, if you stopped and ate or had a rest or walked...clock never stopped. Makes it seem really slow, but just imagine if you only got 14 miles in 4 hours?!? :)

Maynard, did you run this or do it on a scooter? HNY!
