Saw either a dead coyote or a dead dog (it really looked coyote-ish) and a dead deer lying along side the road, a couple collecting cans, and a lot of stuff that had been blown in by that wind storm Friday night.  Thought about getting in a trail run up Battle Creek and down Grove Creek seeing as how the weather is still not being winter.  Opted for what I'll now dub the "road kill" route.

My sister "Quiet Pirate" actually has an annual Road Kill Marathon she runs with her running friend...you should start your own branch :)

okay, I don't know what is going on with your ankle, but you should read my novel post about equivalent x-training and incline running post from my PT when I got to go weight bearing without my boot (last Wed post I think). Long read, but those things may be worth your time if you feel you're having issues. Just a suggestion.

From DaleG on Tue, Jan 31, 2012 at 23:40:22 from 152.216.11.5

Wow, Brad, I hope your ankle is ok. Are you doing the Buffalo Run 50 miler?

From Maynard on Wed, Feb 01, 2012 at 00:12:43 from 71.213.12.61

I hope I'm OK. I probably am.

RAD: I'll check out your post.

Dale: Yes, our very own Smooth pointed out the merits of the 50 miler vs the 50K out there on Antelope Island and I conceded.

From DaleG on Wed, Feb 01, 2012 at 00:15:16 from 66.87.64.254

Smooth can be very persuasive. I had plans to run the 50 miler this year, But its not meant to be, once again.

From Maynard on Wed, Feb 01, 2012 at 00:21:35 from 71.213.12.61

Yeah, you've been in kind of a running funk for a while. I keep waiting to climb out of my life funk, but it still seems to evade me every time I think I'm getting there. ;)

From DaleG on Wed, Feb 01, 2012 at 00:24:49 from 152.216.11.5

I hear ya. I've been having a life funk AND a running funk. I can't believe my last race was in January of 2010. Good grief, what has happened to me? My last completed marathon was UVM in 2009. Now I'm trying to get back into it since I'll be running Ogden with my wife.

From Smooth on Wed, Feb 01, 2012 at 00:27:00 from 75.162.95.99

I just signed up for the Antelope Island 25K! There are only 20 spots left! :)

Dale ~ you should do it now before the price goes up $10 in the morning! Hehe! :)

Bradley ~ c'mon we need you to get excited about running...no more funky talk! How's the ankle?

From Maynard on Wed, Feb 01, 2012 at 00:29:25 from 71.213.12.61

Dale: Good luck to both of us! I found, last year running 2 half marathons with my two older daughters, and the marathon with one of them, that training and running along side someone can really be a plus. I just felt a whole lot more motivated and it became a selfless act rather than what had been 'running-just-for-me.' I don't know--I think I'm rambling...

Smooth: walking around tonight, it's felt fine. I'll give it another go tomorrow on the treadmill after work.

From DaleG on Wed, Feb 01, 2012 at 00:35:02 from 152.216.11.5

I didn't think you were rambling. But yes, I know what you mean. I find that if I'm planning to do a race with someone, it helps motivate me, whereas, if I'm traning for a race where I won't know anyone, it makes it difficult and I end up not training at all.

Smooth....Any chance you'd run it with me, no matter how slow I will be?

From Smooth on Wed, Feb 01, 2012 at 00:35:23 from 75.162.95.99

Crossing my fingers and toes that you'll be good to run tomorrow. Why treadmill?

From Maynard on Wed, Feb 01, 2012 at 00:38:55 from 71.213.12.61

From DaleG on Wed, Feb 01, 2012 at 00:39:17 from 152.216.11.5

From Smooth on Wed, Feb 01, 2012 at 00:39:49 from 75.162.95.99

Dale ~ I'll be walking the steepest hill. :) Who knows what kind of shape I'll be. I plan on running the Red Rock Marathon (very hilly) 2 weeks before! I persuaded my friend, Karen to sign up so I will be running with her for sure! :) It will be fun, I think! :)

First run in the dark with my new Fenix E11 light. Me likey!  But first: a week ago I rolled my ankle.  Nothing major but up through about Wednesday my ankle was a bit sore.  Ran on it last night and all was well.  This morning I was back to the sore again.  Was going to wait until tomorrow morning to run again, but the Fenix in the mailbox changed my mind!

The Fenix E11 is a little handheld LED light that runs off of one AA battery.  It has two power/brightness settings: max (105 lumens) and low (32 lumens).  Battery life at max is 1h50m; at low it's 8h23m--that's quite a bit of difference! Fortunately the low setting provides ample light so I won't be going through batteries like a mad man.  It's small and light enough to carry in a pocket until needed or it'll fit in my Amphipod pouch.

So I went tonight right after work. Walked right out the front door of the office and 1/2 a mile later I was cruising along reliving the days of yore.  Think I might go in to work early tomorrow just so I can do it again.  And maybe it will become a 'workable' habit for me once again.

Good day to run!

GOOD JOB on the 5K! That looks like a nice course with part of it on the Provo River Trail! Was it a hospital sponsored race? Did you get some nice schwag?

Hope to see you at Ogden. Are you staying up there this year?

From Maynard on Mon, May 14, 2012 at 13:40:27 from 199.190.170.28

Yes, it was a hospital sponsored race. The schwag consists of the t-shirt for this event, but it's one of the Nike shirts.

I'll be staying Friday night there in Ogden--are there plans for a get-together/dinner of some sorts? Keep me in the loop, please.

From Smooth on Mon, May 14, 2012 at 13:51:33 from 174.27.212.157

We are not staying in Ogden Fri. night. I haven't heard of any get-together for Fri.

From Smooth on Mon, May 14, 2012 at 14:00:03 from 174.27.212.157

I am going to pick up my packet, as well as Karen's and my bro-in-law's; both of them bought Dale's and his wife's entries. I'll probably head up around noonish to meet Dale at the Expo and then drive back home!

My bro-in-law is in NY for work (he lives in HK) and decided to come to UT on his way back and run Ogden. :)

It's been a while, but I've been busy. Still running a bit, but I'm also working out with a trainer 2 days a week courtesy of the em-ploy-er. Lucky me.

I'm down 9 pounds and have been working the upper half of my bod.

I had had a particularly hard upper body workout on the Friday before this race and I felt it in my sore muscles every time one of my feet hit the ground. And that happened a lot in these 13.1 miles...  Like maybe 2,000 times per miles maybe?  Has anyone ever figured out what that might be?

Anyways, it was a great race.  I did OK. Wished I'd have been in PR shape cause I love running down this canyon.  Have for the past 17 years.  The rest of you folks--stay out! It's mine!

OK, one or two of you can run there too I suppose.

I should go to bed if I'm gong to run with the Red Hot Pink Chicks in the morning.

The hubris a little weight loss will give a guy.  Yeah, that and a decent showing at the Sogonapmit and you think you can take on the world with one hand tied behind your back.

If only…

I have heart issues.  Besides the fact I wear it on my sleeve.  I suffered 1 ½ bouts of Rheumatic Fever as a young’un and had to deal with a heart murmur for a while (still might have a slight one), and I eat like crap—cholesterol hasn’t seen anything below ‘high’ for some time.  So, I’ve been working on improving my diet, cut out 95% of my soda consumption, and have been working with a personal trainer since mid June.

I've lost 15 pounds, and then surprised myself running up and down AF canyon as fast as I did three weeks ago.

I thought to myself after the Sogonapmit that I needed something else—St. George was too far off.  Park City has a nifty little marathon: why not run that little gem again?  I signed up after some slight nudging.

Let me state at the outset, I’m very happy with my results.  It’s a Park City Marathon PR for me!

Somewhere between 2008 when I last ran Park City and Saturday, I forgot how unkind those first 16 miles can be.  And how hard it is to pick things back up in the final 10.  At least for me.

I think I enjoyed this Park City effort more than the previous 4, I just wish I could figure out how to pace myself better.

Someday, maybe.

In my less-heavy-hubris, I thought I could get a 4 hour race in.  Maybe even sub-4 if I was lucky.  Well, I got lucky with a 4:10—and even then, only just.  I’m going to blame it on the 3 sets of leg extensions I did Friday morning.

14.35 miles | 2:16:48 | 9:21 pace | North to the mouth of the canyon and then home.

You can sometimes tell within a few minutes how a run will go.  I knew about 10 minutes in that I wasn't enjoying myself.  Still, I gutted it out even though the second half totally stunk.  Alas.

I could say it all started out well enough.  But it didn't.  I slept in (it's Labor Day) and I did some yard work (it's Labor Day).  By the time I got around to the run, it was after 12 and it had warmed up some.  Still, it's not like we were pushing 90° or anything.

At 1 mile I felt drained.  Not the kind of drained you feel in your legs, but the kind that begins in your gut and then extends out into your extremeties.  So I walked for a minute.  At 2.6 I had to take the GU I had been saving for mile 8.  The GU seemed to help up to mile 6 and then I had to walk again for a bit.

I ran up AF Canyon a bit (0.35) to add some extra mileage to the run and then began the trip back home.  Just before mile 9 I stopped at the Kohler's in Highland to fuel up (my GU had been used) with a Pepsi and some donetttes.  Yes, the crumb kind.

But I had lost it.  Ran/walked the rest of the way home and didn't like it one little bit.  I was actually questioning why I run.  Why do I run?

Fortunately, I have a testimony of running.  Even the bad days are good for me.  I hope.

Amen.

That about sums up how I feel most of the time lately. I think most of it is due to the twenty extra lbs I have packed on over the past two years.

I'm glad you kept going.

WAY to "labor" on Labor Day, Bradley!

So the crumb donettes helped or not?! :)

I'm glad you have a testimony of running. So GO FORTH and RUN even when ye know not why! :) Very proud of you getting 14+ miles in!

Hey, I see Mesa Falls Marathon on the left. R U still planning on it?

From Maynard on Tue, Sep 04, 2012 at 23:07:49 from 71.213.7.33

Dale: I got up this morning for my training session and I just felt deader than dead. Did it anyways. Gonna try it again in the morning whether I'm "up" for it or not. That's how it goes I guess.

Smooth: I missed it. It was back on the 25th--the week after Park City. It is such a fun run though. Would love to do it year in and year out. If only it were closer...

The donettes didn't help.

From DaleG on Tue, Sep 04, 2012 at 23:33:39 from 152.216.3.5

Mesa Falls has been on my list for quite a while, but I never seem to get motivated to run it. I should sign up next year and I could stay with my sister that lives pretty close.

Seriously. It is one of the prettiest marathons I've run. Ever.

You gonna run it next year? If you will, I will.

Dale: I just decided right now that I'm gonna run Mesa Falls next year.

Course and distance PR by 26 seconds but no BQ.

2012 St. George Marathon

What it was: Awesome! A course and distance PR! (by 26 seconds, but still)

What it wasn’t: a BQ

It was an awesome run. Probably one of the most enjoyable I’ve had. It was also, towards the end, one of the hardest—physically and mentally.

I’ve lost 15 pounds since June and had been participating in a heart-health program up through the middle of September.  Those two things allowed me to pull a 1:33 half marathon out of the hat on Sept. 08. I was probably the person most shocked by that result. But it gave me confidence (and a lot of other people as well) that I could run a Boston Qualifier.

And in spite of the fact that this St. George wasn’t the BQ I hoped it might be, I do know that Ogden 2013 could be. Or even St. George 2013 could be. And that is my goal. And I’d appreciate everyone encouraging me and keeping me honest with my eating and workouts.

The race: It started out pretty much like every other Marathon except I lined up with the 3:15 runners.  I thought that, shooting for a 3:20 finish, the extra speed the 3:15 group would have might give me some cushion.  Somehow though, within the first half mile I lost sight of the balloon man. It wasn’t until the approach to Veyo that I saw him again—only it was the 3:25 balloon man. And I was thinking two things: 1) Crap! Have I been going that slow? And 2) Where’s the 3:20 folks? Did they blow right past me?

And that’s when I caught sight of Don. He said he was on pace for a 3:20 race and that I needn’t fear. So I ran with him for a bit. He pulled ahead of me at the top of Veyo, but I had him in my sights for the next 5 miles and I continued to have hope.

Up through mile 16 my average pace was 7:48, but it was at the mile 16 marker that I had to use the temple of doom. Mile 16 was 7:31. Mile 17 was 10:21. I felt down, but not out. Mile 18 came back down to 7:49. But from there to the finish I was a roller coaster averaging an 8:31 pace from 17 through to the finish.  Overall, the pace was 8:11.  I’ll take it, but the faster splits—and where I got them—have shown me that with a little more discipline, effort, and training, I’ll knock that 3:20 out for sure.

Finish: 3:35:06

And yes, my BQ time is 3:25:00.

How's the hammie?

From Maynard on Fri, Nov 09, 2012 at 23:14:14 from 71.195.241.75

MIA.

The hammy seems to be doing alright, although it's been unusually tight for an unusually long period of time since I strained it. But the 3 miles I did last night on the treadmill were uneventful as far as that goes. The knee is a different story.

That and I'm seeing an orthopedic surgeon on Monday about a Rotator Cuff problem.

Good times.

From Teena Marie on Sun, Nov 11, 2012 at 12:08:11 from 63.230.16.129

I am so sorry about the rotator cuff. I have worked with a lot of patients who had rotator cuff repairs lately. Keeping my fingers crossed for you. Let me know how the visit with the surgeon goes.

From Maynard on Mon, Nov 12, 2012 at 12:40:17 from 159.212.71.200

Rotator cuff impingement. Aside from that, it all looks quite good according to the doc. Got a steroid injection and a prescription anti-inflammatory, plus 1 to 2 visits a week for 4 weeks with a physical therapist (if I need more than just the initial instructional visits).

I got to thinking that my new-found proximity to the Provo River Trail might make running it a bit mundane.

Are there any "group" runs planned for tomorrow morning? I've got to go run or else I might get roped into the ward Turkey Ball game and I'd rather not.
